Berlin's housing crisis has become so bad that even a well-known German actor, Devid Striesow, spent two years searching for a suitable flat before giving up and moving to Vienna.

"We were expecting offspring in 2022, which is why it was necessary for us to expand," the 50-year-old actor told the Berlin tabloid BZ.

But Berlin's shortage of flats meant the family couldn't find one even after a lengthy search.

Striesow is known for TV shows and films in Germany but to international audiences he might best be remembered as General Friedrichs, an egotistical German officer in "All Quiet on the Western Front," which took the Oscar last year for Best International Feature Film.

He said he misses Berlin but was fed up with trying to find a flat.

"I sometimes miss both the brittleness and the excitement of Berlin, and so does my wife," he said. "We lived very centrally in Mitte and looked directly at the television tower.

"But after two years of unsuccessfully looking for an apartment, we had to give up - unfortunately, unfortunately, unfortunately!"
