Events and ceremonies honoring the 9/11 anniversary in RI

Several groups in Rhode Island will host ceremonies on Monday to mark the anniversary of 9/11 and remember the almost 3,000 people who died in the terrorist attacks on America 22 years ago.

Events commemorating the Sept. 11 anniversary in Rhode Island

Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery

At 9 a.m., members of the American Legion and Marine Corps League will hold a ceremony at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.

The ceremony will include a presentation of colors, prayer, vocal performances and the playing of "Taps."

The names of Rhode Islanders killed in the attacks will be cited. Bells will be struck to signify the loss of firefighters.

Rhode Island College Memorial Walk

At 10 a.m., Rhode Island College will start its 9/11 Memorial Walk in the quad.

The approximately 2-mile walk will cover the distance of the 110 flights of stairs to the top and bottom of one of the World Trade Center towers, according to RIC's Military Resource Center, which sponsors the walk.

It's "in memory of the individuals that lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. We honor them and the many first responders who rushed to aid in rescue efforts," the school's website says.

Oakland Beach's annual moment of silence

At 10:28 a.m. Warwick's annual ceremony will begin with a moment of silence to observe the time when the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.

Held at the 9/11 Memorial in Oakland Beach, the ceremony will include Warwick’s Police and Fire Honor Guard, as well as Warwick students who will recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Invocation and benediction will be offered by the Rev. Bob Marciano, pastor at St. Kevin Roman Catholic Parish.

Judy Cobden, a survivor of the terrorist attacks, will share her story.

Mayor Frank Picozzi and Rep. Camille Vella-Wilkinson will be joined by the Warwick City Council.
