Apr. 19—YMCAs celebrating Healthy Kids Day on April 29

The YMCA of Metro Atlanta is celebrating Healthy Kids Day on April 29 with free festivals at 18 YMCA locations in metro Atlanta in partnership with Publix Super Markets Charities.

Each year, the Y hosts Healthy Kids Day as an initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families. This year's festivals will feature games, family exercise demonstrations, kids' obstacle courses and inflatables, water and swim safety demonstrations. Events will also include pickleball demonstrations with supplies from PCKL, an Atlanta-based pickleball company, for attendees to practice their skills and learn about the sport.

The Y will also celebrate Community Day with free access to Y facilities across metro Atlanta for all community members.

Informative menstruation conversation for youth is May 6

It's Our Time of the Month is a discussion event led by representatives from the nonprofit Scrub Life Cares and Wellstar Vinings.

These organizations will explain the importance of menstruation care and personal hygiene for children, ages 9-16. The event will be May 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Wellstar Vinings Health Park, 4441 Atlanta Road SE in Smyrna. All children and parents are welcome.

Career Fair and Pop-up Legal Clinic is April 22

Commissioner Monique Sheffield and Chief Magistrate Judge Brendan Murphy are hosting a Career Fair and Pop-up Legal Clinic on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cobb County Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway in Marietta.

Free legal advice will be given at the legal clinic with pre-registration beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Cobb County Human Resources Department, Cobb WorkSource, Chattahoochee Technical College and Wellstar will conduct job interviews on-site. Free information and health checks will be administered by representatives from Wellstar.

Chip your dog for free on May 1

Cobb County dog owners can get their dog chipped at a free Microchip Clinic on May 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cobb County Animal Services, 1060 Al Bishop Drive in Marietta.

Fortify your wellness at Healthy Adults Day

The Northeast Cobb Family YMCA will be hosting its first Healthy Adults Day for adults 50 and older on May 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 3010 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta.

The free event will focus on both mental well-being and physical health including speakers on fall prevention and navigating Medicare. There will be opportunities for a variety of health screenings and a free breakfast.

Kennesaw to celebrate Georgia Cities Week

Kennesaw will celebrate Georgia Cities Week, which is April 23-28.

There will be a variety of contests and raffles throughout the week. The city will also have a scavenger hunt and post daily location hints to social media.

Participants can enter the raffle by posting a photo of themselves at that location and tagging the city in the post.

The 2023 City of Kennesaw coloring contest for Georgia Cities Week is open. Print out a coloring page at https://linktr.ee/cityofkennesaw and bring it by City Hall to enter. Participants should make sure their first name and email is on the back of the sheet. Winners will receive a Kennesaw Swag Bag. Submissions are due by April 24.

Kennesaw Outdoor Movie Series

The City of Kennesaw's free Outdoor Movie Series will kick off on May 6 at Swift-Cantrell Park, 3140 Old 41 Highway in Kennesaw.

The series will begin with a showing of Universal Pictures' Minions: The Rise of Gru, rated PG, on a giant inflatable screen after sundown. It will continue on June 3 with Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder, rated PG-13, and July 22 with Disney Pixar's Finding Nemo, rated G.

Attendees are welcome to bring blankets, chairs, etc. for their own comfort. No high-backed chairs, umbrellas, tents, pop-up canopies, etc. that could block the view of the movie for others. Food vendors and family-friendly activities will be available beginning at 6 p.m.

VIP Tents are available for rental at each movie. Four VIP tents will be available. The VIP Tent rental includes a 10-foot by 10-foot tent installed by Parks & Recreation staff, a six-foot table and six chairs. Tents will be placed towards the back of the viewing area as to not block the view of other attendees. Tent rentals are $50. VIP tent renters can check in early beginning at 5 p.m. and the tents will remain up until the end of the movie.

Road Project Study

Cobb County DOT has commenced work to conduct a Scoping Study for the area of Cobb Parkway at McCollum Parkway/Kennesaw Due West Road and Old 41 Highway.

The county's objectives of this study are to:

— Understand and analyze the existing traffic patterns.

— Accommodate the Federal Aviation Administration approved safety zone at Cobb International Airport.

— Promote the involvement of all stakeholders in the study area.

— Develop at least three minimum conceptual alternatives.

— Select a preferred alternative.

— Evaluate the relative cost, feasibility, and constructability of alternative alignments and sections in logical phases or segments.

They are asking the public to give input on existing conditions in the project area and have provided two ways for the public to provide comments on the conditions.

The first public meeting is scheduled for May 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kennesaw Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive in Kennesaw. This will be in an open house format with a looping presentation, so members of the public are invited to drop by at any point to learn more about the project and to ask questions of the project team staff.

Kennesaw Farmers Market is open

The Kennesaw Downtown Development Authority presents the return of the Kennesaw Farmers Market in downtown Kennesaw.

The market, running through Sept. 25, will take place on Mondays from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in the Main Street Underpass Plaza. The market will be closed on May 29 for Memorial Day, July 3 in observance of Independence Day and Sept. 4 for Labor Day.

The Market will feature farmers and makers, as well as some local favorite food trucks. On a typical Market day in summer, over 20 vendors will be set up offering their best vegetables, fruits, baked goods and specialty items.

Life Rolls On at Swift-Cantrell Park Skatepark

Residents can join an Epic WCMX clinic for wheelchair atheletes on April 29 at 9 a.m. at the skatepark inside Swift-Cantrell Park.

The event is meant to teach wheelchair athletes WCMX basics/wheelchair basics. Participants should bring a helmet, knee/elbow pads and their fastest wheels. Breakfast snacks, lunch and water will be served throughout the day for registered athletes and volunteers.

Relay For Life of Cobb & KSU is April 22

Metro Atlanta residents are invited to join the American Cancer Society to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action for lifesaving change by participating in one of several Relay For Life events taking place around the area this spring.

Hundreds of thousands of people will participate in more than 1,600 Relay For Life events this year to help the American Cancer Society raise funds for research and patient programs and services. Among them will be the Relay For Life of Cobb & KSU, presented by Wellstar Health System.

The event will be April 22 at Larry Bell Park, 592 Fairground Street in Marietta. The park opens at 4 p.m. Open ceremonies will be at 4:45 p.m., Luminaria at dusk and closing ceremonies at 9:30 p.m. The free event is rain or shine and features kids games, food and entertainment.

Annual Root House Plant Sale returns April 29

The annual Root House Plant Sale returns on April 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the William Root House, 80 N. Marietta Parkway NW in Marietta.

This unique sale offers shoppers a wide selection of vintage and native Georgia plants. This year, in addition to plants, the Gift Shop will also have a variety of seeds and gardening books available for purchase, as well as small batch botanical products, including lotions, soaps, bath teas and bath soaks.

The Root House was certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture as an official "Georgia Grown" Agritourism Site in 2021. The gardens at the house have been reconstructed to reflect the gardening practices of the mid-19th century, and all of the vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, decorative flowers and blooming shrubs found in the garden today were researched for availability in Georgia during the 1860s. Many of the plants selected for the Plant Sale can be found growing in the gardens today.

Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with The Crazy Book Lady

The Crazy Book Lady, 5058 Allatoona Gateway in Acworth, will participate in Independent Bookstore Day on April 29 hosting a group of author signings from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The event will take place in the bookstore's parking lot under a 29-foot by 21-foot tent, featuring food trucks, arts & crafts vendors and local authors of books for all ages. This celebration is also part of the Georgia Indie Bookshop Hop, running from April 22-30, encouraging participants to visit multiple independent bookstores for a chance to win prizes.

Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta to have Spring Fling

Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta will have a Spring Fling on April 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at 461 Manget Street in Marietta.

The event wil have a free produce market at 11 a.m., a free 2K Walk/Run at 11:30 a.m. and games and activities at 12:30 p.m. There will be face painting, a bounce house, music, food, crafts, community resources and art therapy activities. The North Cobb Senior Center, 3900 South Main Street in Acworth, will have an Active Shooter Seminar on April 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Participants can join the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events Course, which was designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend Strategy. This program provides strategies, guidance and a proven plan for suriving an active shooter event. There will be a discussion on response options, medical issues and potential drills. The event is presented by the Cobb County Police Community Affairs Division. Free, but registration is required.

The Senior Wellness Center, 1150 Powder Springs Street in Marietta, will have GeorgiaCares Medicare Counseling on April 20 from 9 a.m. to noon.

GeorgiaCares is a public-private partnership, administered by the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services. GeorgiaCares provides free, unbiased information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers with health and drug plans. A GeorgiaCares counselor will be onsite at the center. Staying Fit and Safe on Cobb County Trails

The North Cobb Senior Center, 3900 South Main Street in Acworth, will have Staying Fit and Safe on Cobb County Trails on April 24 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Participants can learn about the Cobb County Emergency Locator Marker project, which provides trail markers at every quarter mile on Cobb County's Trail System. These trail markers are important for emergency dispatchers to quickly direct emergency responders to a location on a trail where a physical address might not exist. This event is presented by the Cobb County Police Department Community Affairs Division. Free, but registration is required.

The West Cobb Senior Center, 4915 Dallas Highway in Powder Springs, will have Felix Mendelssohn: A Classicist Trapped in a Romantic World on April 26 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Felix Mendelssohn lived in the wrong century. His music was "too perfect" for the Romantic Revolutionaries. It didn't possess enough angst for them. Participants will listen to some of his most important compositions and discuss his importance in the rediscovery of Johann Sebastian Bach. Free, but registration is required.
