HOPE Family Resource Center is hosting a community clothing and shoe giveaway for all ages on March 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free event for children and adults on autism spectrum

The event will be held April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cobb Safety Village, 1220 Al Bishop Drive in Marietta. Campers will get to sit in a police car, ride in a fire truck, go up in a ladder truck, play in a bouncy house and inflatable slide, play games and crafts, and meet with firefighters, police officers, sheriff deputies and 911 operators.

Georgia Power events to help residents complete utility assistance applications

Georgia Power's Energy Assistance Team will be onsite at two locations in Cobb County on March 28 to help residents complete their application for utility assistance and answer any questions about the Georgia Emergency Rental Assistance program.

Renters behind on their utility bill may be eligible to receive financial assistance through Georgia Power's collaboration with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. Funding is available for a limited time and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis to Georgia Power customers who qualify. Applicants must apply by March 31.

The team will be at Austell First United Methodist Church, 5705 Mulberry Street in Austell, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at Worship With Wonders Church, 1887 Powder Springs Road in Marietta, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Georgia brewing history on tap

Hop into the history of brewing in the state from its earliest colonial days to the present.

The Georgia Room in the Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street NE in Marietta, will present the story of Georgia's long and complicated history with brewing on April 1 at 3 p.m. The event will also have a featured presentation with one of Red Hare's brewers.

Local history trivia buff competition

Do you know your Marietta history?

Come answer Marietta-themed questions at trivia night on April 5 at 7 p.m. at Red Hare's Still on the Square, 29 W. Park Square in Marietta.

The event will feature a fun night of trivia, authentic Cuban food and locally crafted beer. A portion of the cocktail and beer sales will be donated to the Marietta History Center.

The event is hosted by the Switzer Library's Georgia Room, the Marietta History Center and Red Hare Brewing & Distilling Company.

The sounds of spring and summer coming to Cobb

Cobb's Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre has added more shows to its lineup for the 2023 season.

The venue is celebrating its 20th anniversary and will have special events throughout the year. Performances include soul, R&B, jazz, funk, comedy, hip hop and more.

The schedule is:

Acworth Police create Victim Advocate position

The Acworth Police Department announced the selection of Emily Hall to their newly created Victim Advocate position.

With the creation of this position, Acworth Police will be able to provide additional resources to victims of crimes in Acworth. Victim Advocates are trained to understand and support victims, provide guidance with each step of their case, assist with connecting victims with resources needed and working with victims through the court proceedings.

The vast majority of police departments do not employ a Victim Advocate. Acworth Police believes this is a critical component to providing excellent customer service to the citizens they serve. Their focus will remain ensuring victims of crimes are not forgotten as they face unique challenges during incredibly difficult times.

Hall brings valuable training and experience from her previous job as a Victim Advocate with LiveSafe Resources. She graduated from Kennesaw State University with a degree in Forensic Behavior Science and is assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division.

Glass Blowing Workshop at Mable House

The Mable House Complex, 5239 Floyd Road SW in Mableton, will have a Glass Blowing Workshop with Silica Burns Glass on March 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participants will create one of a kind handblown glass bowls. No prior experience needed or required. Participants ages 6-14 will need an adult to supervise and assist. Everyone making a personal piece of art will need to be registered. Students must provide personal safety glasses and closed toed shoes for this workshop.

Due to the nature of glass, bowls will not be ready to take home until March 27.

Herbal Tea Workshop at North Cobb Library

North Cobb Regional Library, 3535 Old 41 Highway in Kennesaw, will have an Herbal Tea Workshop on March 25 from 2 to 3 p.m.

The free workshop is presented by Food Well Alliance and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Food Well Alliance is a collaborative network of local leaders working together to build thriving community gardens and urban farms.

Participants will be served tea and tea appropriate snacks as they learn about growing, harvesting and using herbs to make tea. The herbs that will featured are mint, thyme, tulsi (holy basil) and sage.

Metro Marietta Kiwanis Club to have Caric Martin speak

The Metro Marietta Kiwanis Club will have Caric Martin speak on March 27 at its weekly meeting.

Martin is a member of the Board of Directors of Kennesaw State University, Director of the KSU Athletic Association and member of the university's Athletic Hall Of Fame. Martin will speak about the growth of KSU and the growth of its athletic programs.

The Club hosts its weekly meetings, starting at noon, at Roswell Street Baptist Church, 774 Roswell Street in Marietta.

The Vinings Library, 4290 Paces Ferry Road in the Vinings area, will have Drop In Spanish and Italian Tutoring on March 28 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The library offers drop-in language tutoring in Spanish or Italian. No appointment necessary. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Rain Garden Work Day

Cobb County Water System's Wildlife and Rain Garden needs help.

Located at the Water Quality Laboratory, 662 South Cobb Drive in Marietta, this demonstration garden showcases ways one can transform their landscape into an urban/suburban sanctuary. The weekly workday includes a quick site tour and orientation as well as basic garden training on how to install and maintain plantings.

Upcoming Cobb County Water System Lunch & Learn workshops

The Cobb County Water System will have the following Lunch & Learn workshops at the Water Quality Laboratory.

March 31: Indoor Leak Detection. Celebrate Fix a Leak Week by learning how to find and fix leaks at home. Participants can learn how to check their toilet for leaks, common places they may find leaks and how to find those sneaky leaks. They will also learn about rebates and resources offered to Cobb County Water System customers.

May 26: Drought Tolerant Plants and Gardens. Participants can join Rob Trawick, UGA's Agriculture & Natural Resource Agent for Cobb County, to learn the importance of planting native plants to survive flash droughts and summer weather.

District 2 Town Hall meeting is April 20

Commissioner Jerica Richardson will reveal the community's priorities for 2023 at the District 2 Quarter 1 Town Hall meeting on April 20 at 6 p.m. at the Boy Scouts of America Atlanta Area Council building, 1800 Circle 75 Parkway in the Cumberland area.

Participants will hear Commissioner Richardson provide updates from the district and Cobb County, and guest speakers from local organizations and elected offices. The town hall will be followed up with a networking event where participants can meet the Community Cabinet. Become a community helper in CERT program

Residents can volunteer for the Cobb County Community Emergency Response Team.

The program prepares people to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, assist victims immediately and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the community's safety.

Limited seats are available. Selected volunteers will meet April 15, April 22 and April 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cobb County Emergency Operations Center in Marietta.

Students must attend all sessions to complete the program. Participants must be at least 16 years old.

Cover-to-cover book sale

The Cobb County Public Library Spring Book Sale will be April 14-16 at the Cobb Civic Center, 548 S. Marietta Parkway SE in Marietta.

Participants can find books for all ages in both hardcover and paperback, magazines, DVDs, books on CD, and audiocassettes. Prices range from 10-cents to $4. All profits from the sale go directly to buying more items for Cobb County Public Library's 15 branches and bookmobile.

Sale hours are April 14-15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and April 16 from 1 to 5 p.m. There is plenty of free parking.

Community food market returns to Cobb

Goodr Pop-up Grocery Market is returning to Cobb to assist communities in need.

The market provides fresh produce, meat, shelf-stable items, milk and other beverages through the mobile markets. This initiative aims to provide families with food to bridge the food insecurity gap.

Markets will be held monthly from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Austell Cobb Senior Center, 4915 Austell-Powder Springs Road in Austell. Future dates for the market are April 13, May 11, June 8 and Oct. 12.

Southern Museum celebrates Women's History Month

The Southern Museum in downtown Kennesaw will celebrate the contributions of Women throughout history with a Women's History Month celebration event on March 25.

The event, free with purchase of regular museum admission, will feature education stations with hands-on activities for both children and adults, a scavenger hunt about women in the Civil War with a word cipher and specialty tours about the Bread Riots led by women in the early 1860s at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Special collections materials will also be on display.

During the entire month of March, the museum will have Women's History Month Gallery Guides available for visitors to learn more about women's involvement and

contributions throughout the permanent gallery.

Easter Egg Drop with the Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team

The Janice Overbeck Real Estate Team of Keller Williams will host an Easter Egg Drop on March 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

It will take place at Mount Paran North Church of God's soccer field, behind the church and up the hill, at 1700 Allgood Road in Marietta.

There will be three different egg drops based on age: 1-3 year olds will go first, then 4-8 year olds and lastly 9-12 year olds. East Cobb Quilters' Guild hosts "Sewcial" for charities

The East Cobb Quilters' Guild will host a "Sewcial" on March 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Room at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Town Center, 625 Big Sandy Road NW in Kennesaw.

The event is to sew Beads of Courage bags for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta cancer patients, placemats for Meals on Wheels, pillowcases for hospitalized children thru Ryan's Case for Smiles and quilts for DEFAC. Beads of Courage bags are a new addition to their outreach. Eighteen quilters will bring their machines, materials and dedication to sew all day to continue their commitments of community service.

Marietta Police to have high school women's self-defense course

The Marietta Police Department, 240 Lemon Street in Marietta, will teach the Rape Aggression Defense System from 6 to 9 p.m.. on April 17, April 19, April 24 and April 26.

The 12-hour program of personal self-defense tactics and techniques is for women-only and designed to be quick and effective in delivering pain to vulnerable locations of the attacker's body.

All four days must be attended to complete the course. Participants must be a senior in high school or the female parent or guardian of the student. Parents who do not want to participate will need to attend the first hour to complete paperwork if student is under 18.

No jewelry is allowed during class. Gym attire is recommended.

Touchstones to the Past: City Cemetery Walking Tour

The Marietta History Center's Collections Manager Christa McCay will have a walking tour of the Marietta City Cemetery on May 20 at 1:30 p.m.

Established in the 1830s, the Cemetery has a host of tales to tell, and a guided walking tour is the best way to experience them. Each tour has a different theme that will explore stories of Marietta's constant residents.

This tour will focus on Cemetery Symbolism. Participants can come and get an up-close view and hear about the details of many hand-crafted tombstones.

The tours, rain or shine events, are conducted over gravel and uneven pathways, so please plan accordingly. The tours, limited to 25 people each, begin at the white house located at the center of Cemetery.
