May 2—South Cobb Regional Library to celebrate Star Wars Day

Town hall meeting with District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr.

The South Cobb Regional Library, 805 Clay Road in Mableton, will have a town hall meeting with District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. on May 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

CPR Course at Cobb Safety Village

The Cobb Safety Village, 1220 Al Bishop Drive in Marietta, will have a Family and Friends CPR Course on May 11 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The course provides instruction on Adult/Child/Infant CPR, Adult/Child/Infant choking, use of an AED in Adult/Child and stopping the bleed in a severely injured person. This course does not offer an American Heart Association completion card. There is a $10 non-refundable registration fee per person to reserve a seat. Ages 12 and up can attend. Wine Down Wednesday concert series starts May 10

Get into the summer groove at a new free summer concert series, Wine Down Wednesdays, at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, 5239 Floyd Road in Mableton.

Concerts will be May 10, June 14, July 18, Aug. 9, Sept. 13 and Oct. 11 at 8 p.m. The Wine Down on May 10 will feature music by Forever Young.

Cobb Animal Services to have Adopt-a-pet Mondays

Take the guesswork out of pre-owned pets. Cobb Animal Service's pets are heartworm tested, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered.

South Cobb Regional Library to have Hygiene Product Donation Drive

The South Cobb Regional Library, 805 Clay Road in Mableton, will have a Hygiene Product Donation Drive for Project U First.

The library is seeking donations of washcloths, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand sanitizers, socks, deodorant, individual packs of hand wipes, menstrual products, individual packs of facial tissue, quart-size and sandwich-size Ziploc bags and bottled water.

The products will be assembled into kits and dispersed amongst vulnerable members of the South Cobb community during outings with Project U First. For more information, call 678-398-5831.

Stream Cleanup at East Cobb Park

Cobb County Water System will have a Stream Cleanup on May 6 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at East Cobb Park, 3322 Roswell Road in Marietta.

Participants should wear clothes that can get wet and dirty. All participants must wear sturdy closed-toes shoes suitable for walking in a shallow stream.

Cobb County Library Youth Chess Tournament

Children, ages 5-18, of all skill levels can test their chess skills at the Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, with USCF Senior Chess Tournament Director Ben Johnson on May 6 from noon to 4 p.m.

First, second, third and fourth place winners will receive a trophy, which they will keep for four months in their house and then return to the library. Registration is required. Space is limited.

Compost Workday

The Cobb County Water Quality Lab, 662 South Cobb Drive in Marietta, will have a Compost Workday on May 9 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Participants can help maintain the Wildlife & Rain Garden's compost area by converting vegetative waste from the garden into nutritious soil amendments. The compost area utilizes three composting techniques — triple bin, passive block bin and round cage. All tools are provided. No experience necessary.

Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Bacterial Monitoring Workshop

Cobb County Water System will have a Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Bacterial Monitoring Workshop on May 9 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

E. coli is an indicator organism that is often used to assess the water quality. Monitoring levels of E. coli can help identify possible sources of pollution.

This workshop will focus on proper collection of a water sample; transfer of sample onto plates that will be incubated, and proper interpretation of results. Volunteers who successfully perform the bacterial monitoring and pass the written test with a score of 90% or better will be considered a QA/QC volunteer for one year.

Switzer Library to have Edina Mazur Alavi

The Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, will have Edina Mazur Alavi discussing the book, "Five Prisons To Arnhem," written by her father, Wladyslaw Piotr "Bartek" Mazur, on May 10 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The book is the autobiographical memoir of his escape during World War II from his native Poland to Great Britain by way of Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain and finally Gibraltar. Copies of the book will be available at the event. For more information, call 770-528-2320.

Rain Garden Work Day

Cobb County Water System's Wildlife and Rain Garden, 662 South Cobb Drive in Marietta, will have a Rain Garden Work Day on May 11 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Located at the Water Quality Laboratory off Atlanta Road, this demonstration garden showcases ways one can transform their landscape into an urban/suburban sanctuary. Storm Drain Marking

Cobb County Water System will have a Storm Drain Marking event on May 13 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Halley's Ridge, 3487 Argent Way in Marietta.

Each pair of volunteers will have a bucket full of supplies that include maps, pens, storm drain markers, adhesive, educational material packets and trash bags. Teams will mark the storm drains, pick up litter and distribute packets to each home to educate them on the newly marked storm drains. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, bring a water bottle, hat or visor, sunglasses and sunscreen. Families are welcome.

Japan: From Feudalism to the Modern Age

The Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, will have Japan: From Feudalism to the Modern Age on May 13 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month, James Camp will speak on the Meiji Period in Japanese history. Images of scenery, culture and numerous historical photos will be featured. The Meiji Period is the key to understanding how Japan became a modern nation after centuries of isolation. Camp, a former Cobb County Library staff member, has an award-winning background in historical studies.

Civil War Roundtable of Cobb County May meeting

The Civil War Roundtable of Cobb County will meet on May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel & Conference Center, 500 Powder Springs Street in Marietta.

Paul Brueske will discuss "The Last Siege: The 1865 Mobile Campaign." The CWRTCC meets the first Thursday of each month and serves as a membership organization

available to the public. The CWRTCC encourages the study, analysis and appreciation of the events, personalities, records and publications associated with the American Civil War. First time visitors are free.

Commissioner Sheffield's annual district-wide litter cleanup

Commissioner Monique Sheffield will have her annual district-wide litter cleanup on June 3 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The district-wide event will bring awareness to the challenges that the district and county face regarding litter. This year will be a collaborative effort with the City of Mableton's mayor and city council members.

The Coasters are coming to town in June

The Highlight Studios, 1148 Franklin Gateway SE in Marietta, will welcome The Coasters on June 10 with shows at 3 and 7 p.m.

The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group that had a string of hits in the late 1950s. This Restoration event will have them performing their hits such as Charlie Brown, Yakety Yak, Poison Ivy, Searchin, Smokey Joe's Cafe and others.

Marietta Cobb Museum of Art to have Art of the Cocktail on May 12

Participants can learn about the Cobb County Emergency Locator Marker project, which provides trail markers at every quarter mile on Cobb County's Trail System. These trail markers are important for emergency dispatchers to quickly direct emergency responders to a location on a trail where a physical address might not exist.
