Virtual pet costume contest

The Angie & Avery Foundation Inc. is having a virtual pet costume contest fundraising event.

The event is accepting registrations now thru June 17. Online voting will begin on June 8 and will close June 17. Contestants will be judged on costume design, creativity, humor and originality. Participants can galvanize friends, family and the general public to vote online. The votes plus the judges' points will be tallied to decide the winner of each round.

Marietta Parks & Recreation to host Storyteller Series

Marietta Parks, Recreation & Facilities announced the "opening of a new chapter" in the special events book, the Storyteller Series, presented in part by Book'n It, Department of English at Kennesaw State University, Frios Pops and Georgia Writers Association.

Kicking off on June 14 at noon in Glover Park on Marietta Square, Literary Lunch Break will have dramatic readings of classic tales, vendors and writers resources. Then, every Wednesday in October from 5 to 8 p.m., Glover Park After Dark, will get participants into the spooky season mood.

Create with Virtual Reality

The Sewell Mill Library & Cultural Center, 2051 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta, will have Create with Virtual Reality on June 3 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Book a Librarian sessions are tailored to meet one's specific library needs. Author Event with Tameka Mitchell

The South Cobb Regional Library, 805 Clay Road in Mableton, will have an Author Event with Tameka Mitchell on June 5 from 2 to 3 p.m.

Mitchell, a local author, will visit the library for a special storytime and activity for children and their caregivers. She will be reading her book "My Super Mom and Her Sidekick Crew" and sharing how every family is unique, how moms are superheroes in their own way and how everyone in a family has their own special super power.

Fairy Habitat Workshop

The Cobb County Water System will have a Fairy Habitat Workshop on June 6 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Oregon Park, 145 Old Hamilton Road in Marietta.

Young water stewards, ages 3-5, will have a chance to use natural materials to create shelters for fairies and other small creatures. Compost Workday

The Cobb County Water Quality Lab, 662 South Cobb Drive in Marietta, will have a Compost Workday on June 6 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Residents can help maintain the Wildlife & Rain Garden's compost area by converting vegetative waste from the garden into nutritious soil amendments. Smyrna Curbside Sanitation and Recycling schedule change

The City of Smyrna announced that it has changed the schedule for its Curbside Sanitation and Recycling to increase efficiency and make holiday adjustments easier.

Pool Passes at Tolleson Pool

The City of Smyrna announced that residents can reserve their Tolleson Pool pass now.

The pool will be open from May 27 to Sept. 4. Passes allow unlimited entry throughout the season. Family passes are $125 for residents, $150 for non-residents. Individual passes are $50 residents, $75 non-residents.

Upcoming Smyrna Infrastructure Projects

The City of Smyrna announced that over the next three months there will be ongoing projects throughout multiple divisions.

The Streets Division will be working on:

— Sidewalk installations at King Springs Road from Hayes Drive to Dunn Street; and at Woodruff Drive.

— Sidewalk repairs at Roswell Street from Spring Street to Highland Avenue; and within the Heritage at Vinings subdivision.

The Water and Sewer Division will be working on:

— The final phase of the 3/4" citywide water meter replacement.

— Water service inventory verification. The contractor is moving into Ward 1, Ward 4 and Ward 5.

— Water main replacements.

— Sewer inspections ongoing through 2025.

Caribbean Cove opens at Six Flags White Water Memorial Day weekend

Six Flags White Water will open Caribbean Cove, a new interactive water playground, on May 27 and Dive-In Movies in June and July.

Caribbean Cove, situated right in the middle of a shallow pool, has over 25 interactive water elements and four mini water slides.

Wednesday nights, June 7-July 26, guests can pull up a float and enjoy a movie right from the comfort of Atlanta Ocean Wave Pool during Dive-In Movies. This brand new after-hours event will feature a selection of both classic and recent fan-favorite films and is included with park admission.

Six Flags White Water is open weekends through May 21. Summer daily operation begins May 27.

21st Annual Willie Pitts Jr. Memorial Reunion is June 2-4

The Paul E. Kelly Jr. American Legion Post 296, 906 West Atlanta Street SE in Marietta, will host the 21st Annual Willie Pitts Jr. Memorial Reunion from June 2-4.

Capt. Willie Pitts Jr. was Georgia's most decorated Veteran of the Vietnam War and Past American Legion Department of Georgia Commander. Among his countless recognitions received four Purple Hearts, a Battlefield Commission, six Broze Stars, the Legion of Merit, two Silver Stars, four Air Medals, four Army Commendation Medals, Master Wings and Iranian Wings.

The Memorial Reunion weekend is centered around fun, fellowship and fundraising for the American Legion's National Emergency Fund. The fund was set up to provide financial grants quickly and efficiently to members of The American Legion., Sons of The American Legion and Posts that have been affected by natural disasters.

The Avenue West Cobb hosts first-ever dog-centric event

The Avenue West Cobb will host its first-ever dog-friendly event — Paws Fest, sponsored by The Veterinary Clinic, on May 20 at 10 a.m.

The weekend-long event will feature several DockDogs canine competitions, pet-friendly vendors, giveaways and live music spun by a DJ.

The competitions taking place during Paws Fest are a part of DockDogs National Sportsmen's Series. Throughout the day, DockDogs will present a series of high-flying canine contests for spectators, including the Big Air Wave competition, Extreme Vertical competition and Speed Retrieve competition. Visitors attending Paws Fest can watch the contests on both days at the following times:

— May 20 will have Big Air Wave #1 at 11 a.m., Big Air Wave #2 at 12:30 p.m., Big Air Wave #3 at 2 p.m. and Extreme Vertical Competition at 4 p.m.

— May 21 will have Big Air Wave #4 at 11 a.m., Big Air Wave #5 at 12:30 p.m., Speed Retrieve Competition at 2:30 p.m. and Big Air Finals at 4:30 p.m.

Cobb PARKS will have two outdoor pools opening in May.

Sewell Park Pool in Sewell Park, 2051 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta, will open on May 27 and will be open seven days a week through July 31. Hours are 1 to 6 p.m., except holidays when it is open from 1 to 5 p.m. From Aug. 1 to Sept. 4, the pool will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. on the weekends. Holiday hours are in effect for Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day and Labor Day. Fees are $3.50 for youth, $4.50 for adults and $3 for seniors, ages 55-plus.

The Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta, will have 3D Printer for Beginners: Let's Make an Animal Tag! on May 22 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Participants can learn how to create their own 3D design using Tinkercad. This event is for ages 18 and up. Registration is required. Participants must be able to pick up printed keychain at a later date.

The 19th Century Russian Musical Nationalists

The West Cobb Senior Center, 4915 Dallas Highway in Powder Springs, will have The 19th Century Russian Musical Nationalists on May 24 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Beginning with Mikael Glinka, participants can pursue the development of a Russian musical language. Led by the "Powerful Kuchka," sometimes called "The Mighty Five," these self-taught composers banded together and put Russia on the musical map. Free, but registration is required.
