Friday night lane closures on SR 280 in Cobb

Georgia Department of Transportation contractors will install lane closures on State Route (SR) 280 Connector/South Cobb Drive Southeast in Cobb County this weekend to continue resurfacing activities from the Fulton County line to SR 5. Resurfacing improves the condition of the deteriorating roadway.

Single alternating right and left lanes will be closed on SR 280 Conn eastbound and westbound throughout the project area on May 12 from 9 p.m. to May 13 at 6 a.m.

The project is scheduled for completion in winter 2023.

Weekend lane closures on I-75 between Cumberland Boulevard, Northside Parkway

GDOT contractors will install lane closures on I-75 this weekend near Smyrna and Vinings in Cobb and Fulton counties.

These closures are related to a bridge preservation project on I-75 at three locations in Cobb and one location in Fulton County. Three right lanes will be closed on I-75 southbound between Cumberland Boulevard and Northside Parkway beginning May 12 at 10 p.m. to May 15 at 5 a.m. This project will replace or repair the bridges' concrete overlay, substructures and superstructures, and bridge joints. This $10.7 million project is scheduled for completion in fall 2023.

Town Center CID bringing back Yoga in Aviation Park

The Town Center CID is bringing back Yoga in Aviation Park this summer.

Starting June 3, and continuing for the next five weeks, yoga in the park will take place every Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m. The free series, led by REI Co-op instructors, is open to the public and participants of all skill levels. Weather permitting, each session is limited to 50 participants. Registration is required. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat and water bottle. Parking is limited. Carpooling is recommended.

Aviation Park, a three-acre property adjacent to the Cobb County International Airport runway, is an enterprise between the Town Center Community and Cobb County.

Free Resources for Senior Citizens Expo is June 2

The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb County is sponsoring a free event at which seniors can explore free and low cost resources that many of them do not know are available to the 55-plus population.

The Free Resources for Seniors Citizens Expo will be June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Acworth Community Center, 4361 Cherokee Street in Acworth. The free event was a success when it was held last October in South Cobb.

Special sponsors are the home repairs division of Meals on Wheels Atlanta, which offers free home repair and house rehabilitation to eligible seniors; and Georgia MemoryNet, which in partnership with Emory University is a statewide program dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

All income levels are welcome at the event. There will be assistance offered on Medicaid/Medicare issues and on how to best evaluate the various health insurance offerings for seniors.

Affordable housing is a big concern and at the Expo there will be representatives from a home sharing service that matches compatible seniors together so they can control their housing costs. There will also be information on senior independent living homes.

Hearing impaired individuals will be able to obtain free high tech phones, eligible seniors can sign up for free computer tablets and discounts for power bills will also be available.

Avery Gallery to have closing reception for Ellen DeLoach

Avery Gallery, 390 Roswell Street in Marietta, will have a closing reception for Ellen DeLoach — Nesting: Loss, Triumph + Redemption on May 19 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Nesting is the second posthumous exhibition of paintings by local and nationally exhibited artist, Ellen DeLoach (1955-2015). The exhibit, featured in the main gallery, will have large and small-scale mixed media works not shown in the artist's lifetime. Additional abstracts, landscapes and figurative works will also be on view. There will be wine and light bites served.

54th Annual Georgia Mineral Society Gem & Mineral Show

Cobb County Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway in Marietta, will have the 54th Annual Georgia Mineral Society Gem & Mineral Show from May 12-14.

The three day educational event will feature amazing rocks, crystals, gemstones, minerals, and fossils from all over the world. Participants can choose from a large selection of beads, unique jewelry and jewelry-making supplies. The Strand Theatre, 117 N. Park Square in Marietta, will have Jazz at the Strand: The Music of Ella Fitzgerald on May 14.

A random drawing to perform at the Apollo Theater launched the career of the most successful female jazz singer of all time. Marietta's New Theatre in the Square, 11 Whitlock Avenue in Marietta, will have Comedy Squared featuring Lace Larrabee on May 19.

Larrabee is a nationally touring comic and former beauty queen from Atlanta. The Cobb Senior Services Expo and Marketplace will be May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cobb Civic Center, 548 South Marietta Parkway SE in Marietta.

There will be more than 100 vendors at the event covering topics like senior living, travel, hearing, safety and Medicare. Northside Hospital will provide health screenings on site. Cobb County PARKS is seeking food, arts and culture vendors for the 2023 Cobb County International Festival.

The festival is a celebration of the best traditional food, music and art from around the world in the community. This year it will be held on Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Jim R Miller Park Event Center. Vendor applications are due by July 14.

Sunset Frog Walk is May 18

Cobb County Water System will have a walk on May 18 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. along the pond trails of Lost Mountain Park, 4845 Dallas Highway in Powder Springs.

While walking, participants can practice identifying frogs by their calls. The group will also record and report the species that they hear along the way. The event is free and open to all ages. Minors must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Concert on the Green: A Juneteenth Celebration

Concert on the Green: A Juneteenth Celebration will take place at Logan Farm Park on June 17.

The event opens at 5 p.m. with performances and live music taking place before the Total Package Band takes the stage from 7 to 9 p.m. This concert is a celebration in observance of June 19, 1865, when the last African American slaves held in Confederate states were finally freed by the Union army. The City of Acworth invites the community to bring blankets and folding chairs to join this celebration of freedom and respect for all cultures. July 4th Concert and Fireworks in Acworth

The City of Acworth and the Acworth Business Association will present one of the largest fireworks extravaganzas in metro Atlanta.

Each year on July 4th, live music and fireworks take place at Cauble Park. Live music will start at 5:30 p.m. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m., subject to change depending on weather. Participants without a parking pass, or if the parking is full, will need to park downtown and walk down to the park. Shuttles will not be running for this event. Handicap parking will be available at McCall Primary School and there will be a shuttle provided for those attendees. Handicap shuttles begin at noon.

City of Acworth's Senior Luncheon

Every third Wednesday of the month will be the City of Acworth's Senior Luncheon at the Acworth Community Center, 4361 Cherokee Street in Acworth.

Seniors can come for lunch and Bingo. This program is free to all seniors, but participants must RSVP to attend. Reservations will be accepted the week prior to the event.
