Walk on the Riverside event honors visionary
The Trust for Public Land hosted an evening celebration of the Chattahoochee RiverLands project on Oct. 16.
It honored Ralph Edwards, TPL's conservation trailblazer. Many were in attendance to also provide financial support for the 2.7-mile pilot project in District 4.
The project stretches 100 miles along the river from the Buford Dam to Coweta County. It will cross seven counties, numerous cities and municipalities.
Commissioner Monique Sheffield, in collaboration with Cobb County staff and TPL, is working towards a regional trailhead for the 2.7-mile segment between Mableton Parkway and Riverview Landing.
The project was recently highlighted in Georgia Trend magazine.
"Typically, you don't find those assets in majority-minority communities and it's not that the desire isn't there; it's just that the focus and attention haven't historically been given to those communities with those assets," Sheffield said. "Access to the river will not only encourage development, but it will also enhance residents' mental and physical health."

Thanksgiving food drive
H.O.P.E. Family Resource Center is collecting non-perishable food items to help ensure families have a great Thanksgiving.
Needed items are boxed potatoes, boxed stuffing, canned green beans, canned corn, cranberry sauce, cake mix, icing, cornbread mix, canned fruit, canned mixed vegetables, cream of mushroom soup, macaroni and cheese, brownie mix, turkeys, bags of rice and dried beans.
Items can be dropped off until Nov. 11, Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6108 Mableton Parkway, Suite 116 in Mableton.
The organization's mission is to assist families and children that face overwhelming life challenges.

Get dressed up for the costume parade
The South Cobb Regional Library, 805 Clay Road in Mableton, will have a Costume Parade and Storytime on Oct. 31 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Attendees can participate in a special storytime in the Children's Programming room, then travel around the library to show off their costumes and receive a special treat from the librarians.

Wallace Park fixer-up and rededication
Members of the Chi Gamma Gamma chapter of Omega Phi Psi have given a makeover to a pavilion at Wallace Park, 6289 Pisgah Road in Austell, clearing debris and re-painting walls and picnic tables.
There was a plaque dedication honoring their commitment to the park. Cobb County Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid and Commissioner Monique Sheffield were in attendance for the dedication to thank them for their good work in the neighborhood.

Website helps visitors locate parking on Marietta Square
The City of Marietta announced that it has made it easier to locate both free and paid parking lots on and around Marietta Square.
The Square is a thriving entertainment, restaurant, retail, service, specialty and office use destination for local and visiting patrons. Parking options available to the public include 3,237 spaces — three decks with 1,520 spaces, 336 on-street spaces, and 1,381 spaces within 26 private lots. Since November 2018, 497 newly available parking spaces have been added to the downtown for public use.

MHC hosts Tombstone Cleaning Workshops at the Marietta City Cemetery
The Marietta History Center will continue its tombstone cleaning workshops at the Marietta City Cemetery, 420 West Atlanta Street in Marietta.
Established in the early 1830s, the cemetery is the final resting place of many of Marietta and Cobb County citizens. The tombstones in the cemetery are artifacts and are often the only record of the person's life, but many of these need to be cleaned. These hands-on workshops will help teach others the proper tools, products and techniques to use to clean a tombstone, while doing no harm to the stone or the landscape.
The workshops will be Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon, weather permitting. If needed, a rain date will be the following Sunday.
Tickets are $25 per person and each workshop is limited to 10 people. Along with the hands-on workshop, attendees will also get a tour and history of the cemetery. Tickets can be purchased through the Museum's online store at www.MariettaHistory.org.

City of Marietta Alcoholic Beverage Licenses due Nov. 15
City of Marietta alcoholic beverage licenses are available for 2023 licensing.
The City licensing process has aligned with the Department of Revenue renewal process and is only available online. Residents can access the renewal forms and payment at https://gtc.dor.ga.gov/_/#5.
The system has been updated to accept most major credit cards or echecks.
All alcoholic beverage licenses are due by Nov. 15. The current 2022 licensing expires on Dec. 31. No penalty and interest is applied, if submitted on or prior to the due date.

Walk For The Brave is Nov. 5
Walk For The Brave will be Nov. 5 at 8 a.m. at Glover Park on Marietta Square.
The event is designed to raise awareness about the challenges that veterans, first responders and front-line healthcare workers face in times of crisis and after their service. This also includes their families.
Participants can join an all-ages, all-level walk to raise awareness for veterans mental health and suicide prevention. There will be two walks — a 10K route to Kennesaw Mountain and back or a 1K route to the Marietta National Cemetery.
Tickets to walk are $22, which is how many veterans take their own life every day.
Cobb Thanks You For Your Service is a 501 (c) (3) whose mission is to help veterans and their families.

Apple Annie Arts & Crafts Show
The Apple Annie Arts & Crafts Show has been a Christmas tradition at The Catholic Church of St. Ann's since 1981.
The St. Ann's Council of Catholic Women plans and hosts the annual show, with support from the entire St. Ann's family, as a fundraiser for the parish and local charities. Over 110 artisans are carefully selected by a jury to showcase their handmade goods during the event, which will be held Dec. 2-3 with a preview night on Dec. 1.

Berlin Photography Lecture and Kristallnacht Commemoration
Kennesaw State University's Museum of History and Holocaust Education, 3333 Busbee Drive in Kennesaw, will have a photography lecture and Kristallnacht Commemoration featuring world-renowned photographer Jason Langer on Nov. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Musueum presents the lecture by Langer in association with the exhibit "Berlin: A Jewish Ode to the Metropolis," which premiered at the Museum in August. Langer will speak about German and Jewish history and memory, and the role the photographer as an artist and documentarian.

Veterans Pod and mural unveiling
On Oct. 21, Commissioner Jerica Richardson and her Community Cabinet Veteran Chair Dan Hydrick were able to close out the long-standing Veterans Pod and mural project.
Hyrdrick worked with the Sheriff's Office, Accountability Courts and Board of Commissioners to create the pod in the Adult Detention Center for veterans. Tivoni Brundage, a local veteran and artist, offered to create a mural in the pod to create a more conducive healing environment.

District 2 quarterly Town Hall & Strategic Plan Session
Join Commissioner Jerica Richardson on Nov. 10 for the District 2 Quarterly Town Hall and Cobb Strategic Plan Listening Session at the Boy Scouts of America Area Council, 1800 Circle 75 Parkway in the Cumberland area.
At 5:30 p.m., the Strategic Plan Listening Session will be an opportunity for the community to learn about the Strategic Plan and share their input.
At 6:30 p.m., Commissioner Richardson will start her quarterly town hall. She will discuss District 2, Cobb County Government and local organization updates for the last quarter and upcoming projects.

Cobb PARKS fall festival Halloween drive-through
Commissioner Jerica Richardson thanked Cobb PARKS and all the volunteers who made the Fall Family Festival of Fun a success.
The event featured 30 scenes with characters, including superheroes, princesses, villains, pirates and video game avatars. More than 2,500 cars came through over the course of five hours. Community partners were iHeartRadio, 94.9 the Bull, Cobb EMC, Anything Bundt Cakes, Jim Ellis Kia and VW, Joy FM, Carl Black Kennesaw, Batteries Plus and the Southern Museum of Locomotive History.
Commissioner Richardson joined Cobb Library's storybook team as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Her assistant, Aliye Korucu, flexed her powers with the superheroes as the Scarlet Witch.

The community group for the Powers Ferry Corridor has openings on its board of directors.
The Powers Ferry Corridor Alliance is a non-partisan, non-profit group composed of individuals, Homeowners Associations and business people. They work together to promote quality growth and revitalization, support their local public schools and help the community's overall economic vibrancy.
As a PFCA board member, residents would be part of the team leading these efforts. The board meets every month at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday.
Board members live, work or own a business in the corridor defined by Powers Ferry Road and include parts of Terrell Mill Road, Windy Hill Road, Wildwood Parkway and Windy Ridge Parkway.

Take a dog or cat home as a treat during the October Howl-o-ween pet adoption special at Cobb Animal Services. All month, all cats and dogs over 25 pounds are $20.
Don't forget about Monday Funday. Every Monday, Cobb Animal Services will feature pets, dogs and cats, that one can adopt for free from their trailer.

Johnson & Alday present Six Strings IV: A Concert to Benefit McKenna Farms
Johnson & Alday will have present Six Strings IV: A Concert to Benefit McKenna Farms on Nov. 18 at the Strand Theater.
This year's theme takes on an 80s flare with the show headlined by 80s cover band Forever Young. Bellwether Station will open the show.
The show will benefit McKenna Farms, whose mission is to provide innovative therapeutic programs and resources for children with special needs and their families throughout Cobb County and the metro area. With over 23 therapists, they treat over 500 children, age zero to 21, every week.
McKenna Farms provides physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as therapeutic riding on their horses. They offer these resources for children with autism, developmental delay, Down Syndrome and any number of other needs. McKenna Farms is currently raising money to begin doing aqua therapy to add to their therapeutic services.
General admission tickets are $25 and a VIP experience is $50 per ticket. The VIP event includes a silent auction, catered food and drink, and an 80s dance party with a DJ.

Marietta church providing free food to those in need on Nov. 1
The Episcopal Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, 1795 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta, is partnering with There's Hope For The Hungry to provide free food for those in need.
On Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., those in need can come to the church and follow signs through the church parking lot, park and come inside to register, then have a brief conversation and after that be directed back to one's car to pick up a box of non-perishable food that will feed four people for two weeks, a loaf of bread, frozen chicken, a quart of milk and a box of cereal. All COVID-19 precautions will be followed.

The Georgia Room "Georgia's Cherokees" program is Nov. 7
Historian James Camp will give his lecture, "Georgia's Cherokees: The Epic Tribal Story," on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in The Georgia Room at the Charles D. Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta.
Camp has an award-winning background in historical studies and he is a Cherokee descendant. The program features many graphics depicting tribal history and culture. Construction on 285 affecting commute to and from Cobb
Construction on I-285 around the 400 interchanges will heavily affect the drives of residents if they need to cross the top end of the perimeter in the coming months.
The Georgia Department of Transportation says to expect major disruptions to daily commutes and driving routines and should prepare for profound delays on I-285, potentially adding an hour or more to daily commutes.
Motorists should leave earlier, utilize navigation apps to select alternate routes and consider alternative commute options through Georgia Commute Options.
Drivers continuing to utilize I-285 should pay attention and use caution throughout the work zone.

The Marietta Cobb Museum of Art, 30 Atlanta Street SE in Marietta, will be hosting the "art of the cocktail" on Nov. 11.
The featured cocktail will be created and presented by Tito's Handmade Vodka. Michael Price will be entertaining guests while they enjoy two exhibitions — More Than Dreams: Exploring the Surreal in Art and a selection of Landscapes from the Permanent Collection.
Guests can also participate in an Art Auction presented by and benefitting InCommunity, a non-profit agency in Atlanta that provides community-based services and support to people with developmental disabilities and their families.

Big SHEbang Bluegrass Festival is Oct. 30
The Big SHEbang Bluegrass Festival will be Oct. 30 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at Raccoon Creek Music Park, 332 Music Park Path in Dallas.
Doors open at 1:15 p.m. All proceeds support the Marietta Police Athletic League whose mission is to prevent juvenile crime and violence by providing civic, athletic, recreational and educational opportunities that create trust and build understanding between law enforcement and youth.

— Becky Buller, who has earned 10 IBMA awards, including Songwriter (2015), Female Vocalist (2016) and also in 2016 became the first woman to win the IBMA Fiddler award. In 2020 Buller co-wrote the 2020 IBMA Song Of The Year, "Chicago Barn Dance."
— Pam Gadd, former lead vocalist with Grammy Nominated Wild Rose. She toured with Patty Loveless, recorded with Dolly Parton and performed with Porter Wagoner on the Grand Ole Opry. She was also inducted into the Northern Kentucky Legends Hall of Fame in 2022.
— Irene Kelley, an ASCAP award winning songwriter with songs recorded by Alan Jackson, Trisha Yearwood, Loretta Lynn and Ricky Skaggs. As a recording artist, she has had seven No. 1 songs on the Bluegrass Today chart. She has performed on countless stages, including the Grand Ole Opry.
— Donna Ulisse, who has released 10 albums and is SPBGMA's 2022 Female Vocalist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year in 2016, 2018 and 2022. She co-wrote the 2017 Song of the Year, "I Am A Drifter."

Salvation Army Red Kettle Kick Off is Nov. 12
The Salvation Army of Marietta Cobb is set to host the Annual Red Kettle Kick Off on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at The Marietta Cobb Corps, 202 Waterman Street in Marietta.
This event serves as the official "ringing-in" of the holiday season for the Salvation Army. The festive celebration will include The Salvation Army Brass Band, special emcee Linda Stouffer, key note address by Marietta native and NBA All Star Dale Ellis and recognition of kettle sponsors, donors and volunteers.
Lts. Juan and Kirbi Reyes of the Marietta Cobb Corps will kick off the Red Kettle Campaign for 2022 with a holiday remark and honorary first dollar contribution. The ceremony also highlights the plethora of services offered by the Salvation Army, including youth services, after school programs, children's music classes, food pantry assistance, homelessness shower/laundry access, financial emergency intervention, church services and angel tree. Funds raised through the Red Kettles support these and other programs year round at The Salvation Army of Marietta Cobb Corps.
Red Kettle Goals in 2021 were exceeded by raising $428,000. The 2022 Campaign goal is $440,000. Dip Jars are also included in the campaign to allow for flexibility of giving.
