Sep. 21—Cobb County Republican Women's Club program is Sept. 23
The Cobb County Republican Women's Club will have a lunch event on Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel & Conference Center, 500 Powder Springs Street in Marietta.
Coffee and Conversation with the Candidates will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m. The program will be "Georgia: The Home of Second Chances: Responsibility and Accountability in Our Prisons and Court System" with Pastor Tony Lowden. He is the Director of Faith and Justice Initiative for the Governor's Office of Transition Support and Reentry.
Benita Cotton Orr of High Grounds Consulting will be a special guest. Sybil Eberhart will sing the National Anthem. The Club will also be honoring the fallen deputies with a donation to the Cobb County Sheriff's Foundation.

Skilled Trades and Apprenticeships Career Fair is Oct. 18

Author talk on Oct. 4 at The Georgia Room
The Georgia Room will present In the Shadow of Salem: Families and Their Allies on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Charles D. Switzer Library, 266 Roswell Street in Marietta.
The author talk program will feature Richard Hite, author of "In the Shadow of Salem: The Andover Witch Hunt of 1692" and CJ Majahad, Director Emeritus of the North Andover Historical Society, and will be livestreamed in the Georgia Room. The presentation is about Andover's involvement in the witch hunt and how family connections were significant to the witch hunt throughout the region, especially in Andover.

100 Black Men of North Metro announce inaugural "Run For Tomorrow" 5K Race
The 100 Black Men of North Metro Atlanta Inc. announces the inaugural Run for Tomorrow 5K to be held Oct. 15 at Towne Center at Cobb mall, 400 Ernest
Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw.
The 5K race is a major event in the 100 Black Men's year-long 30th Anniversary Celebration.
Proceeds from the race will support the organization's Men of Tomorrow Mentoring Program and the Kennesaw State University Collegiate 100. The Men of Tomorrow program serves youth ages 11-18. The Collegiate 100 is a campus-based organization that supports development of social, emotional and educational needs of college students. These programs focus on helping prepare students for life after their secondary or post-secondary education.
The race is open to runners of all ages and abilities. The presenting sponsor is WellStar Health Systems and other major sponsors include Truist, Walgreens, Coca Cola United and Publix Supermarkets.

A Tribute to Veterans is Nov. 6
The Earl Smith Strand Theater on Marietta Square will have A Tribute to Veterans on Nov. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.
The program, hosted by the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro, pays tribute to the Veterans who served the county. It features patriotic songs, presentation of the colors, recognition of all the branches of the military and the remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
It will also feature best-selling author, renowned speaker and Georgia Author of the Year Award recipient Alvin Townley and the screening of the award-winning documentary — "Jeremiah."
The film received four Southeastern EMMY Awards including Best Documentary. It is based on Townley's book, "Defiant," which tells the story of future U.S. Sen. Jeremiah Denton who for eight long years battled North Vietnamese captors and led the American POWs in the
infamous Hanoi Hilton prison. The award-winning, public television original film "Jeremiah" uses family, friends and fellow POWs to tell the story of this American hero.
Admission is free. Donations will accepted to support local Rotary community service projects.

ARTportunity Knocks Peace of Art event is Sept. 24
Town Center at Cobb mall, 400 Ernest Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw, continues its partnership with ARTportunity Knocks through the Peace of Art event on Sept. 24 from noon to 3 p.m. in Center Court.
Young artists and families can expect a day filled with fun, creativity and prizes. The free program will feature visual and performing arts by student, culinary and other professional artists. Attendees can also expect appearances and collaborations by Town Center at Cobb brands, Cobb County Schools, the Cobb County Sheriff's Office and youth from the faith community with talents in the arts. The Peace of Art Initiative is an ongoing nonprofit program that occurs once a month.

Rain Barrel Make and Take Workshop is Sept. 21
Participants can learn how to make a rain barrel on Sept. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. at Hyde Farm Park, 726 Hyde Road in Marietta.
A rain barrel is a rainwater harvesting system that is connected to a downspout from a house or building. By collecting rainwater, one can save energy, water and money. Rain barrels also help reduce erosion and stormwater runoff and increase water quality.
Registration is required. Because of budget and limited resources, this free class is only open for Cobb County residents and those residents who have not taken the class before. There is a lifetime limit of one barrel per household.

Cobb Law Library to host traffic tickets talk
Cobb Law Library will sponsor a free public program on traffic tickets.
Attorney Sylvia Goldman will focus on what happens after a ticket is issued, including points for various violations, entering a plea and the court process.
"Traffic Tickets" will be Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. in the Cobb Law Library, Fourth Floor of Cobb Superior Court, 70 Haynes Street in Marietta.

The Law Library has computers available for legal research. It also has self-help books available on a variety of common legal needs, such as drafting a simple will, the divorce process and landlord and tenant rights.

Citizenship & Civics Kits available for check-out at Cobb County libraries starting Oct. 3
The Citizenship & Civics Kit created by Cobb County Public Library will be available for check-out starting Oct. 3.
The kit includes official U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services publications and study guides on the naturalization process for becoming a U.S. citizen.
The kit is designed to provide information for people seeking to explore the steps for becoming a citizen, a process which for some immigrants seeking thorough and accurate details about the process can be a challenge, said Katherine Zavala, a member of the library's Community and User Engagement department. The kit will also be helpful for preparing them in advance of meeting with an immigration attorney, Zavala said, who chairs the library's Multicultural Services Team and leads the Citizenship & Civics Kit initiative.
"Coming from an immigrant family and being the only one born in the states, I remembered when my family, at separate times, became U.S. Naturalized Citizens and how they had to seek out study materials to help them in this process," said Zavala.
The kit contains publications on the rights and responsibilities of immigrants seeking to become a U.S. citizen, quick civic lessons for the naturalization test, flashcards in English and Spanish on naturalization, and a Citizenship Resources at the Library sheet. The checkout period for the kit is three weeks.
The launch of the Citizenship & Civics Kit coincides with National Diversity Week observed Oct. 3-7 to raise awareness of how diversity has shaped the country. Founded in 1998, National Diversity Week is officially observed the first full week of October.
Information on the Citizenship & Civics Kit and links to downloadable documents from USCIS, multilingual citizenship study resources and related library resources are posted at www.cobbcounty.org/library/services/passports-citizenship. The same webpage includes information on the passport application service for first-time applicants provided at the West Cobb and Mountain View libraries since early September. Murder at the Four Deuces
The West Senior Center, 4915 Dallas Highway in Powder Springs, will have Murder at the Four Deuces on Oct. 1 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Participants are invited to the grand opening of the new speakeasy, The Four Deuces. With this 1920's gangster murder mystery, there will be plenty of plotting, bribery and backstabbing. Seniors will be assigned a role, be given a character packet before the event so they can prepare and improvise their way through an evening of murder.
