Events this week include an opera at NSU, Winterfest and Miss Aberdeen

Here's a look at five events to check out in Aberdeen this week.

Northern State University Opera presents “Amahl and the Night Visitors”: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Johnson Fine Arts Center’s Black Box Theater. Tickets, which are only available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and NSU faculty and staff. Students are free. Jeffrey Madison from Superior, Wisconsin, is guest director for this 50-minute one-act show tells the story of the night of the Three Kings following the star to Bethlehem and stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a shepherd boy who lives with his widowed mother.The show features Aberdeen fourth-grader Eden Judith Barkmeier (Amahl); NSU professor of music Darci Bultema (Amahl's mother); and guest artist Robert Cantrell (Balthazar) and NSU students Dylan Rausch (Kaspar) and Tanner Pietz (Melchoir). Cantrell is a much sought after bass-barritone in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Aberdeen Community Theatre presents “The Homecoming”: 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday and Sunday at 2:30p.m. Tickets are $22 at the door and can be purchased at Riddle’s Jewelry, 3811 Seventh Ave. S.E. or by calling 605-225-2228. This show presents a wintertime tale of a large family in the hills of Virginia waiting for their father to return home on Christmas Eve.

Winterfest – A Winter Arts Festival: Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aberdeen Civic Arena, 203 S. Washington St. Sponsored by The Aberdeen Arts Council and Aberdeen Recreation & Cultural Center, this year’s Winterfest features a variety of holiday shopping exhibits.

Miss Aberdeen Contest: Saturday 6 p.m. at Roncalli High School, 1400 N. Dakota St. Contest features crowning of Miss Aberdeen, Jr. Miss Aberdeen, Little Miss and Little Mister Aberdeen and, a new contest, Baby Miss and Mister. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for children 5 and under. Tickets are $2 less with three canned goods to be donated for Thanksgiving dinner to those in need.

Northern State University band concert "New Beginnings": 3 p.m. Sunday at the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and NSU faculty and staff. Students are free. Concert features the NSU Symphonic Band, under the direction of Audrey Miller, and the NSU Concert Band, under the direction of Travis Netzer.
