Evergreen Commons using grant to support ‘vibrant aging’ with nutrition, cognitive care

HOLLAND — A grant of $380,000 will help Evergreen Commons enhance the well-being and quality of life for its members, Day Center participants and community through new programming.

The grant comes from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund as part of its Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles program. Evergreen Commons is calling the effort “Vibrant Aging: Empowering, Collaborating, and Partnering.”

With the funds, Evergreen Commons will develop a new web-based information hub, Brain Works and Alzheimer’s programming and a social and hospitality zone with a new dietitian. The new services will “break down barriers to wellness and belonging” with outreach, collaboration and partnerships.

The organization said the grant is “a significant milestone” that will help provide nutrition, cognitive stimulation, access to information and community collaboration.

"The center of the target for us is disrupting the way people age,” said Jill Ver Steeg, president and CEO of Evergreen Commons. “With this generous grant, we will increase our impact on cognitive health, food and metabolism and increase our innovative programming focused on Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

"In addition, the hub will be the center of gravity for older adult resources that will strengthen the collaboration with our partners. We are grateful to the Michigan Health Endowment Fund for making these aspirations a reality.”
