Oh my — we’ve caught a big case of impatience waiting for the next installment of Big Little Lies. And since we must continue to suffer until June 9, we decided to at least put our languishing to good use. The result? A run-down of everything to know about BLL season two. ‘Cause, in case you missed the intense teaser trailer, what’s in store for the Monterey Five looks like a whole mood.
If you’re as obsessed with the HBO show as we are, a few of the facts we’re going to throw at you are probably already on your radar. But it’s been more than a minute since last season, so we could also use a refresher. Plus, we’ll be updating here anytime new information becomes available. So, just consider this your comprehensive guide to the who, what, when, where and how of BLL.

When is it coming back?
Season two of BLL will premiere Sunday, June 9, at 9/8c on HBO.
Which major stars are returning, and which aren’t?
Reese Witherspoon (Madeline), Nicole Kidman (Celeste), Laura Dern (Renata), Shailene Woodley (Jane) and Zoë Kravitz (Bonnie) will all reprise their roles as the “Monterey Five” from season one. Adam Scott is also back as Madeline’s husband, Ed, and presumably so will the children of the main characters — this includes the most adorable scene-stealer ever, Madeline’s daughter Chloe (played by Darby Camp)… aka, the kid with the best iPod shuffle ever.
Not returning is Alexander Skarsgard, who played the not-so-dearly departed abusive husband Perry. However, we’re not ruling out flashback cameos.
Are there any notable new additions to the cast?
Meryl Streep is making her way to Monterey to play the grieving mother of late son Perry and prying mother-in-law to Celeste. Streep has confessed to being “obsessed” with the series to the point that she reached out about being cast. And since leaked set photos reveal Reese Witherspoon — in character as Madeline, naturally — throwing an ice cream cone at Meryl’s character’s head, we can’t wait to see what sort of drama Queen Streep has in store.
Also, according to Vulture, HBO is on the hunt for actors to tackle a few other new roles. There’s new teacher Michael Perkins, who lands on the bad side of Renata when Amabella suffers a panic attack over a global warming lesson. There’s another new school employee who reportedly befriends Jane. And we even get to meet Bonnie’s parents, which might provide a little more insight into all the stuff she’s been bottling up.
What else is different?
While season two will have the same screenwriter, David E. Kelley, and an assist from Big Little Lies book author Liane Moriarty, it won’t have the same director. Original director Jean-Marc Vallée signed on when BLL was still being billed as a mini-series. Now that it has expanded, director Andrea Arnold is taking the helm.
Oh, and Renata has friends! “It’s really cute that Dern’s character has girlfriends,” Witherspoon said. “All she wants to do is drink wine.”
What is it about?
In the wake of Perry’s unexpected and violent death, the women have to figure out how to stitch their lives back together and find normalcy again (whatever that is, right?). “When we come back, their lives, like all of our lives, seem very well put together on the surface but then the fissures and the fractures being to emerge,” Kelley told E! News. “Once the crevices start to widen, it escalates pretty quickly.”
How long before we fall back into a sad, Monterey-less showhole?
Seven episodes. That’s it. So, revel in binge-watching the first season, because the second installment is guaranteed to go by in the blink of an eye. Bring wine — we’re all going to need it.
