Everything Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry said during week one of spring practice

Spring football practice is underway in Tuscaloosa and that means we get to hear from some of the Alabama football players each week for the next five weeks.

This week a pair of rising juniors spoke to the media in star offensive tackle JC Latham and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry.

Both Latham and McKinstry are expected to be leaders this season for the Crimson Tide and arguably two of the best in the country at their respective positions.

On Wednesday, each player fielded a handful of questions from the media. Here is everything Kool-Aid McKinstry had to say during his media session.

On being one of the older guys now in the Alabama DB room

“Ah, man. I mean it’s crazy because the first two years here I was around guys who have been here for a while and knew exactly what was going on and how to do things, but now, I’m that guy to help lead on the younger guys.”

On what he has seen from Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson

“I’m kind of the defensive side of the things, so I haven’t been really paying attention to what’s going on over there. I’ve just been working with our side of things, trying to make sure we’re the best, fast and physical defense in the country.”

On WR Malik Benson

“I feel like he’s a good receiver, very competitive. He wants to play. He knows what he’s doing. He’s working very hard to be a great player for us.”

On his first impressions of new DC Kevin Steele

“I like Coach. He’s here. He’s doing what he needs to do, I feel like. I feel like the defense will be a good defense. We’re working to become the best defense, so that’s what we’re doing.”

On what he has seen from the younger defensive backs

“I feel like they’re working and they’re trying to learn to get the technique down, the Coach Saban technique, as everyone knows it as. I feel like they’re working and trying to do the best they can to learn it. I mean we’ve only had one day, so today will be better, I feel like.”

On how the versatility of the Alabama secondary will help this spring

“I always feel like being able to play more positions and do more in the secondary can help you out, add more value to you. I feel like that’s a good thing, Coach moving us around and just seeing where we fit in best to make the team the best it can be.”

On which young defensive backs have stood out

“I feel like all our DBs have stuck out, the young guys who have came in. I don’t wanna just single anyone out. I feel like everyone’s on the same page right now, trying to become the best player they can be.”

On what he learned from Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams

“I would say just knowing the defense, the ins and outs of it and what we’re trying to get accomplished in the defense. That’s the most thing I learned from older guys like Jordan.”

On focusing just on the season and not the NFL draft

“My grandma always told me be where my feet are, so that’s where I’m at right now. I’m not really looking to the future.”

On his comfort level of playing opposite Terrion Arnold

“It feels good. I mean I’m very confident in Terrion, very happy to have him on the other side of him. I’m very comfortable with having him on the other side of me. That’s how I feel, I feel good about that.”

On the Alabama basketball team's success

“I’m very excited to see them. They’ve got something good coming ahead of them. I just want them to go out there and do their thing.”
