Everything I ate on Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine's Day

Whether you rooted for the Chiefs, the Eagles or were only tuning in to watch Rihanna’s halftime show, there’s no denying that food is integral on Super Bowl Sunday.

My husband's father and stepmother, their 1-year-old daughter and my sister-in-law, were visiting from Northeast Ohio for the weekend. By Sunday night, I had prepared two brunches and two dinners for six, so, for my own sanity I kept the Super Bowl food simple.

Here’s what we ate:

  • “Dad’s Dip,” a simple recipe I learned from my father: cream cheese, salsa and green onions

  • Guacamole, salsa and tortilla chips

  • Vegetables, pita chips and store-bought hummus

  • Super-crispy oven-fried wings with buffalo sauce, using J. Kenji Lopez-Alt's recipe from Serious Eats

  • Garden salad with ranch dressing

  • Apple crisp, using Betty Crocker’s recipe, for dessert

Next year, I think I’ll skip the dishes and order in from Barbara Ann’s Southern Fried Chicken or Mission Barbecue!

For Valentine’s Day, we kept dinner simple with The Fresh Market’s Chicken Dinner To Go. I’ve written about it before, but $20 gets you a rotisserie chicken, six cornbread muffins and two pint-sized sides. For dessert, we had raspberry, honey-lavender and red velvet macarons from The Sweet Palette downtown.

Looking forward to spring and summer

Warmer weather has me dreaming of days spent in the sun, live music, fairs and festivals. The Dogwood Festival announced its main acts last night, which you can read about more here. What other Fayetteville fairs and festivals are you looking forward to this spring and summer? Let me know at tshook@gannett.com.
