Barbie is making a splash in metro Detroit ahead of the arrival of the "Barbie" film later this month. Long a household name with American children, the Mattel doll will come to life in the new film. Here's a look at some local activities, from Shabatt Sh' Barbie to Barbenheimer.

Barbie Beach Party

A Barbie-themed party will come to Campus Martius Park later this week, bringing Barbie-themed activities and colors to downtown Detroit. The event will feature music, food and beverages, live music and an advance screening of the "Barbie" film.

The free party will be at the Beach at Campus Martius from 4-9 p.m. Thursday, hosted by the Downtown Detroit Partnership and Warner Bros. Organizers encourage attendees to come dressed up in pink Barbie-style clothing for a chance to win VIP tickets to an advance film screening. There will also be Barbie box photo booths, cocktails and cotton candy and Barbie giveaways.

Shabbat Sh'Barbie

Local Jewish organization the Well will host an event combining the love of Barbie and Jewish heritage next week. The event will feature a Shabbat dinner, a screening of the "Barbie" film and of the "Tribe," a short film on the origins of Barbie and her connection to Jewish culture.

The event will be held 6-10 p.m. July 21, beginning at Bamboo Royal Oak for dinner and the "Tribe" screening, then heading to Emagine Royal Oak at 7:30 p.m. for the "Barbie" film. Tickets are available online for $10 for the program at Bamboo Royal Oak, while dinner and movie combo tickets are sold out.

Film screening parties

Emagine Theaters will host several Barbie-themed events over the next couple weeks to promote the "Barbie" film.

Next week, several local Emagine locations will host advance screenings of the film with a blowout party. The event will feature Barbie giveaways and concessions, creating a complete Barbie-themed film viewing experience. The Barbie Blowout Party will be at the Emagine theaters in Canton and Rochester Hills at 6 p.m., July 19 with the film starting at 7 p.m.

A bubbles and brunch event will celebrate the film's release in the days following the Barbie premiere, providing a film showing and meal. The meal includes a buffet brunch and bottomless mimosa bar, followed by a film screening starting an hour and a half into the event. A $50 ticket provides entry to the event, including the cost of the buffet and an $8 movie ticket.

The event will be at Emagine Royal Oak and Emagine Palladium in Birmingham July 23, including showings in the morning and afternoon. The morning event begins with a buffet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a film screening at 12:30 p.m. and the afternoon event begins with a buffet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and a film screening at 2 p.m.

Beach workshop

You're So Fancy Studio will be hosting a Barbie-themed photo shoot at the Stony Creek Metropark Baypoint Beach on Sunday. The event will feature models with three different outfits styled around the theme of retro Barbie attire fit for the beach. Attendance requires purchasing a $50 ticket online for general admission.

The 'Barbie' film

Warner Bros. brought together the $100 million film starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The live-action film tells the story of Barbie living in the real world, going through daily adventures with her boyfriend Ken. The story casts a new perspective on the Barbie doll, a popular toy with generations of American children since 1959.

Barbenheimer

The Barbie film's upcoming release coincides with that of "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's film about nuclear weapons developer J. Robert Oppenheimer. The result? An explosion of "Barbenheimer" memes. The contrast between the two films and their simultaneous release on July 21 has captured the internet, with internet users examining the films' differences in budget production, plots, and more, coining the meme Barbenheimer.
