Everything Bills’ Brian Daboll said about latest head coaching searches

The NFL’s head coaching carousel was more of a roller coaster this past weekend and Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was in the front row.

Daboll, interviewed for the vacancies with the Jets and Chargers previously, but it was the latter that many considered him a frontrunner for, including ESPN. Turns out he wasn’t.

The Bolts hired Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley instead on Sunday. From there, the ride wasn’t quite over the Daboll, connections to the Eagles’ job, which only opened last week, surfaced.

But this trip came to a screeching halt as a final report said that Daboll was no longer interested in any other jobs out on the market. He was going to stay with the Bills.

On Monday, Daboll addressed all these latest headlines. But he didn’t exactly confirm nor deny anything.

“I’ll kind of say the same thing I’ve said the last few weeks; I’m privileged and honored to be here and working for this organization,” Daboll said. “Everything that I have and we have is focused on what we need to do this week which is a big game against Kansas City. I’m humbled, honored to have some opportunities … ultimate goal is to become a head coach one day, but that’s not on the agenda right now for me,

“It’s doing everything I can do to help our team be the best they can be this week, and that’s what it’s always been, that’s what have always be.”

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott backed his offensive coordinator by expressing that he does not believe anything in regard to him getting a job would distract Daboll from the job he has with the Bills… because yeah, there’s a big task ahead and it’s called the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Well one, I’m confident that it will not be a distraction for our preparation; Brian’s a professional. Two, I have had conversations with Brian and I’ll keep those conversations private. And then three, I think Brian’s very qualified to become a head coach and sometimes things happen where a lot of factors get involved in those selections and those decisions,” McDermott said. “At the end of the day we’re happy to have Brian with us for as long as he’s been with us and hopefully moving forward as well because he’s a valuable member of our staff.”

“All eyes are on the Kansas City Chiefs, nothing more,” Daboll himself added.

The Bolts were pointed to as the favorite for Daboll because the Buffalo OC helped groom Josh Allen into a potential MVP. Instead, they opt for a defensive-minded head coach in Staley. Maybe their thought process is that their quarterback in Justin Herbert is a bit ahead of schedule as compared to Allen at this point in his career, so matching him with a defensive coach could work better.

Regardless, it seems increasingly more obvious that Daboll will remain in his native western New York for, at least, one more year.
