Director Bong Joon-ho has confirmed he’s working on the sequel to his Academy Award-winning movie, Parasite.

Parasite made history at the Oscars last year as the first ever non-English language movie to win best picture. The film also scooped up the awards for best director, best original screenplay, and international feature film.

Following its success, fans had been eagerly awaiting news of a second instalment, and now we’ve finally got something to look forward to.

Here’s what we know so far.

What will the second Parasite be about?

Joon-ho revealed the follow-up to Parasite is split in two versions, one Korean and one English. “I’m currently writing two scripts at the same time and it feels like I’m spitting my brain in half,” he said on The Director’s Cut podcast.

“The Korean film is located in Seoul and has unique elements of horror and action,” he said. “The English project is a drama film based on a true event that happened in 2016,” he added, “of course, I won’t know until I finish the script, but it has to be set half in the UK and half in the US.”

While Joon-ho hasn’t revealed whether the upcoming movies are a sequel to Parasite, he said they'll be similar to his 2009 movie, Mother.

When will the second Parasite be released?

Given that director Joon-ho has only just finished writing one of the follow-up scripts, it’s unlikely we can expect to see the films hit cinemas any time soon. Joon-ho himself has also remained relatively tight-lipped when it comes to specifics about the release dates. This report from i-D however, explained that there were two years between his last movies (Okja and Parasite), so perhaps we can expect to see something in 2022.

Is there anything else in the works?

Last year, Joon-ho confirmed he’s working with HBO on a Parasite spin-off TV series, along with Succession's Adam McKay. The series is expected to take a deeper look at the characters and plots of the movie. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Joon-ho said; “There were so many stories that I thought of that could happen in between the sequences you see in the film, and some background stories for each character. I really wanted to explore those ideas freely.”

The series is still in the very early stages of production, so there’s no release date yet.
