Everything we know about the shooting at Friday's Choctaw v. Del City football game

CHOCTAW — Shots were fired and a 16-year-old student was killed during a Friday night football game between Choctaw and Del City high schools.

Several others, including adults and teenagers, were injured.

Here's what we know so far about the tragedy and what's next.

What happened at the Choctaw v. Del-City football game

The shooting occurred in the third quarter between Del City and Choctaw on Friday night. Multiple gunshots were heard throughout the stadium, and players and officials ran off the field, while others lay down on the field and in the stands.

In a Saturday press release, Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said officials "believed an argument started between at least two males which lead to the shooting."

Who was the shooter? Has anyone been arrested?

A juvenile male has been arrested on a second-degree murder complaint in connection with the shooting at the Choctaw and Del City football game, the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The warrant issued for the teen's arrest states probable cause was established through witness' interviews with investigators. Those interviews indicated the altercation that led to victim Cordea Carter's death may have been started by another person.

That person is believed to have started fighting with the 16-year-old victim, while another witness said the shooter "ran from behind ... while fumbling a black gun in both hand ... approaching Cordea closely while firing the gun."

The Uvalde Foundation for Kids had promised a reward for anyone who provided information that led to an arrest in the case. The foundation told The Oklahoman it was trying to find out if there is one person whose tip is responsible for the arrest; otherwise, the foundation said it will start a scholarship in Carter's name.

At least one shot was also fired by an off-duty Del City police officer hired by the school district as security.

The officer shot a 42-year-old man in the chest, after perceiving "some sort of threat," said Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III in a press conference Monday.

Investigators recovered two guns and eight rounds at the scene, and Marshall said there were reports of "two muzzle flashes."

Anyone with information about what happened can contact her agency through Oklahoma County's dispatch office at 405-869-2501.

Four people were taken to area hospitals after the incident Friday night:

  • A 42-year-old man was transported the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and remains in critical condition, Johnson said in Monday's press conference.

  • A 15-year-old girl, shot in the thigh, was treated and released.

  • Two other females, believed to be students were injured trying to leave the area sustaining broken wrists and a broken leg, Marshall said.

Who was killed?

Cordea Carter, 16, was shot and killed during the Del City-Choctaw game at Bill Jensen Field. The victim has also been identified as Cordae Carter and Corday Carter by various law enforcement officials and family members.

There had been some confusion on social media around Carter's first name, but the spelling was provided by both the Choctaw Police Department and the medical examiner.

"Our department didn't want to release his name until we were able to talk to the family, which didn't happen until late (Monday)," Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said Tuesday afternoon.

The 16-year-old boy was shot and pronounced dead at the hospital, Del City police said, from a gunshot wound to the groin.

Authorities said the boy who died was a Midwest City High School student.

Multiple investigations ongoing

Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office and Del City police, but the Choctaw Police Department is the lead agency, Marshall said.

The sheriff's office is investigating the Del City officer who shot the 42-year-old man because the officer was off-duty at the time. Both that officer and the other Del City officer hired as security for the game are on administrative leave, said Del City Police Chief Lloyd Berger.

How schools responded

Superintendent David Reid of Choctaw-Nicoma Park Schools announced in a statement that this week’s football games will be postponed.

Mid-Del Schools made the decision to close its campuses to visitors for the week, and added additional police presence in and around the schools, according to a statement from the schools Superintendent Rick Cobb.

School officials in both districts said counseling will be made available to students.

The football game scheduled for Friday, Sept. 1 between Del City and Booker T. Washington was moved to Thursday at 6 p.m.

The same night as the shooting in Choctaw, a 16-year-old boy waved a gun at a football game between Bentonville West (Arkansas) and Booker T. Washington in Tulsa. Authorities said a brief stampede occurred when people who saw the weapon started running, but no one was injured.

Police said the suspect ran away and dropped the pistol, and officers recovered the weapon.

Investigators seeking public's help with evidence, finding a witness

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday posted on Facebook photos of a potential witness they're looking to get in contact with. An update to the post stated they were able to identify the witness.

The office also shared a link where photos or videos from the game, "especially regarding the officer-involved shooting," can be uploaded.

Anyone uploading those, or with any other information, is encouraged to contact investigators at 405-713-1017.
