NFL history will be made Saturday night, and Chiefs fans couldn’t be less excited about it.

For the first time in NFL history, a playoff game won’t be available on cable or an over-the-air channel, other than in Kansas City and Miami.

Does the thought of accessing Peacock sound daunting?

NBC Sports analyst Cris Collinsworth suggested Sunday night that viewers find someone younger to help them get the streaming service.

“If you wait until next Saturday to try and do it you’ll get emotional and upset. If you just do it now, download Peacock, it’ll be easy,” Collinsworth said. “Get one of your children or somebody younger. They’ll do it in two minutes instead of the two hours it takes me.

“But it’s good. Just go ahead and get it done now and you’ll be happy and watching playoff football next week.”

Well, that’s one option.

Here is what you need to know about how to get Peacock, how to cancel it and answers to other questions you might have.

How to subscribe to Peacock

First, you have to sign up on the streaming service’s website, which you can find here. The cost is $5.99 a month. You’ll need to create an account when you sign up.

WiFi is another prerequisite for streaming the game because once you’ve signed up, you’ll need to watch the game on a supported device.

That means a computer with Chrome (on Windows/Mac), Firefox (on Windows/Mac), MS Edge (on Windows/Mac) and Safari (on a Mac).

You can also watch on a tablet or phone, as well as with connected TVs, game devices (Xbox and PlayStation) and streaming devices. The latter includes Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku and Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices with Fire OS 6 and above.

You can find a full list here of supported devices.

Is Peacock free on Amazon?

Even if you have an Amazon Fire Stick, the Chiefs-Dolphins game will not be on Amazon Prime. You’ll still need a one-month subscription to Peacock.

How to cancel Peacock

If you want to cancel the streaming service on Saturday night after the game or later during the month you paid for, here is how, via Peacock:

  • Log in to your account

  • Click on Plans & Payments

  • Click Change or Cancel Plan

  • Click Cancel Plan

Is there a free option?

Yes, there is a way to get it for free, but it’ll take multiple steps.

Peacock is free for Instacart+ customers. You’d have to sign up for Instacart+, which offers a free two-week trial. After the Chiefs-Dolphins game, you’d have to cancel the Instacart+ account before the free trial ends or be charged for that service.

If you have Instacart+, you may have been unaware you already have this service, so you’re all set. Or you could save all those steps and pay the $5.99 to get Peacock for a month.

Why did NFL put playoff game on a streaming service?

Last year, Amazon Prime bought the rights to “Thursday Night Football,” meaning fans had to stream those games. Peacock streamed a Week 17 game between the Bills and Chargers last month, and it doled out a lot of money to carry this postseason game.

The Athletic reported that Peacock paid the NFL an estimated $110 million for the right to carry one playoff game. Yep, just one. Saturday’s Chiefs-Dolphins game is a trial balloon of sorts.

Hans Schroeder, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of NFL Media, talked about the Peacock game last year in a story on the league’s website.

Expanding the digital distribution of NFL content while maintaining wide reach for our games continues to be a key priority for the League, and bringing the excitement of an NFL playoff game exclusively to Peacock’s streaming platform is the next step in that strategy,” Schroeder said.

We’ll see if that strategy pays off for the NFL.
