Christina Ricci Opens Up About a Possible Return to "Wednesday" Season 2

Jenna Ortega is Gen Z’s official scream queen, and her new Netflix series, Wednesday, is more than enough proof that she perches upon the throne. Her take on the iconic Addams Family character not only had fans in a frenzy on TikTok, but gained critical acclaim. In season one of the Netflix hit, Wednesday discovers her psychic abilities, which lead to her preventing a killing spree that has terrorized the town surrounding her school, Nevermore Academy. She also makes friends — and enemies — along the way as she investigates a supernatural mystery involving her parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams, 25 years ago.

Will there be a Wednesday season 2?
We all gave thanks to the Addams family since the first season of Wednesday dropped right in time for Thanksgiving. Now, the fan-favorite series is officially coming back for a second season on the streaming giant. Netflix announced the season two renewal of Wednesday with a video posted to Instagram on January 6, 2023. "Over the past few weeks, I've been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet," Jenna Ortega says in the video as the Addams Family character.
The best part? The announcement video is set to the tune of Lady Gaga's "Bloody Mary," which made waves on TikTok thanks to a Wednesday-inspired dance challenge. Watch the full clip below.
In a November 2022 interview with Variety, Gough and Miller teased that they’ve laid out three or four seasons of the series in hopes of it getting renewed. “For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully, the show is successful,” Millar told the publication, confirming that they have a “pretty clear runway of what [they] want to do in future seasons.”
Fred Armisen, who portrays Uncle Fester in the Netflix series, also expressed hope for a sophomore season. “I thought that’s good writing to keep people wanting more,” he shared in an interview with E! News, commenting on the season 1 cliffhanger finale. “I think that’s difficult. Even as something that's supposed to continue on, they did a really good job of keeping it exciting.” Gwendoline Christie, who stars as Larissa Weems, echoed Armisen’s sentiments. “I just love that it leaves you wanting more,” she told E!. “It leaves you absolutely hungry to see how this story's going to develop.”
Will Wednesday season 2 be on Netflix?
According to a report by Deadline, there's a possibility that season two of Wednesday may not make its way to Netflix because the series is produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). MGM recently closed an $8.5 billion merger with Amazon, which means the rights to Wednesday may go to the company and premiere on its streaming service, Prime Video.
Deadline also reports that Amazon is not planning to make all MGM content exclusive to Prime Video. There's a chance it can stay on its current streaming service, but MGM, Amazon, and Netflix have yet to confirm any changes for where the series will live.
When does Wednesday season 2 come out?
The first season of Tim Burton’s highly anticipated Netflix series was recently released on November 23, 2022, so there’s no telling when (or if) there will be a second season. The show had a record-breaking debut week, according to Deadline, surpassing 341 million hours viewed. But it will have to be greenlit by the streaming service in order to start production on another season.

What will Wednesday season 2 be about?
The first season of Wednesday took viewers into the world of Wednesday Addams during her time as a student at Nevermore Academy. She discovers her psychic abilities, attempts to solve a chilling mystery involving her parents, and balances relationships with sirens, werewolves, and vampires at her new school.
At the end of the season, she discovers that her coffee shop crush and the Sheriff’s son, Tyler, is actually the Hyde monster who committed merciless murders at Nevermore. She also found that the school's botany professor, Marilyn Thornhill, is actually a woman named Laurel Gates, who was believed to have died years prior. She sought to get revenge on the Outcasts who murdered her family and was the Hyde master who controlled Tyler and hypnotized him into his monstrous form. Wednesday and her frenemy, Bianca, ultimately defeat Laurel and her evil accomplices.
However, Wednesday isn’t totally in the clear. When her friend, Xavier, gifts her a cell phone, she receives a threatening message that reads, “I’m watching you” with a gif of a knife going into her head. It’s likely that this is a setup for the plot of season two if the series gets renewed by Netflix.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Gough and Miller teased the premise of the possible season, saying, “We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward."
Enid, Wednesday's roommate, is also an important part of the premise. "The show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that," Gough said, "We’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged. That was her big arc for the season, right? So it’s like now, we do that."
"Then, the other thing that’s really interesting is to continue to explore the Wednesday-Morticia mother-daughter relationship as well," Gough added, "Which now that Morticia knows about the power, it has given her sort of an idea of how that’s going to go. How is their relationship going to evolve?”
What has the cast said about Wednesday season 2?
Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair) dished to Variety about the off-screen and on-screen relationship she shares with Jenna Ortega. "Jenna is very much like Wednesday. But because I’m not much like Enid, we don’t have the same dynamic in real life — me poking at her constantly, her brushing me off," Myers explained. "We get along so well, I love Jenna. She’s one of my closest friends. I think we have a different dynamic off-screen, but I still don’t think it’s any less important or deep or beautiful than Enid and Wednesday’s."
"I would really like to see Wednesday go somewhere international and interact with the international outcasts from different countries. I feel like that would be really fun," she added.
As far as love goes, Myers mused, "As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness," she began. "She [Wednesday] just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that."
Lon Molnar, co-president of the MARZ VFX team for Netflix dished to J-14 about the Addams family companion and pet Thing and how its character could develop in the future. "I think it would be fantastic to explore what may have happened to lead him to be severed, possibly," Molnar said. "I think that'd be — it was an idea that was floating around, and it would be fantastic to explore that for sure. But for us, anything with that character front and center, we're ready to take the helm and help him tell that story."
Jenna Ortega revealed what she wants from a possible season 2 of Wednesday, and her answer is really simple — more darkness. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Jenna said, "I kind of want her to be darker," and added that she hoped Wednesday wouldn't "play things so safe" in season 2. "There are a lot of lines about her saving the school and doing whatever, but for me, her main drive with the monster is of a competitiveness," Jenna said. "Kind of, 'Man, how's this guy doing this?' I think I want it to continue down an antihero stream rather than a typical hero."

There were multiple deaths at the end of Wednesday season one, which means those characters likely won’t return for season two if it happens. Christina Ricci, Riki Lindhomoe, and Gwendoline Christie are some of the actors whose characters faced their demise.
During a chat with Entertainment Tonight, Ricci opened up about possible plans for her return. "I don't think I'm allowed to say. On my end, the door is open," she told ET. Looking back on her character's role, the former Addams Family star joked, "She was so fun to play. It's always so fun to play a villain."
In a November 2022 interview with Variety, showrunner Alfred Gough teased Tyler’s return in season 2. “Yeah. Absolutely. He’s out there. That’s what we wanted to convey,” he told the publication.
Doohan himself confirmed this rumor, telling ET, "Coming back. Can't really say anything else besides that, but I'm so excited to go back." The actor continued, "Tyler's secret is out of the bag, I'm excited for season 2 to kind of explore him fighting between the monster and the real version of him. He doesn't have his master, Christina Ricci, anymore, so what's he gonna be like? I don't know."
Wednesday’s other showrunner, Miles Millar, also told TV Line that he’d like to explore more of the Addams family dynamic if the show gets renewed for a second season. “We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles,” he said. “Catherine [Zeta-Jones] is, I think, an iconic Morticia. The relationship between Wednesday and Morticia is also essential to the show, and the idea that Wednesday is trying to forge her own path outside the family is important.”
