Jenna Ortega is Gen Z’s official scream queen, and her latest Netflix series, Wednesday, is more than enough proof that she perches upon the throne. Her take on the iconic Addams Family character not only had fans in a frenzy on TikTok, but gained critical acclaim. In season one of the Netflix hit, Wednesday discovers her psychic abilities, which help her prevent a killing spree that has terrorized the town surrounding her school, Nevermore Academy. She also makes friends — and enemies — along the way, as she investigates a supernatural mystery involving her parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams, 25 years ago.

Will there be a Wednesday season 2?
We all gave thanks to the Addams family when the first season of Wednesday dropped in time for Thanksgiving 2022. Now, the fan-favorite series is officially coming back for a second season on Netflix. The streaming giant announced Wednesday’s renewal with a video posted to Instagram on January 6, 2023. “Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet,” leading lady Jenna Ortega says in the video as the Addams Family character. “It’s been pure torture. Thank you.”
The best part? The announcement video is set to the tune of Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary,” which made waves on TikTok thanks to a Wednesday-inspired dance challenge. Watch the full clip below.
In a November 2022 interview with Variety, showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar teased that they’ve laid out three or four seasons of the series in hopes of it getting renewed. “For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully, the show is successful,” Millar told the publication, confirming that they have a “pretty clear runway of what [they] want to do in future seasons.”
Fred Armisen, who portrays Uncle Fester, also advocated for a sophomore season. “I thought that’s good writing to keep people wanting more,” he shared in an interview with E! News, commenting on the season 1 cliffhanger finale. “I think that’s difficult. Even as something that's supposed to continue on, they did a really good job of keeping it exciting.” Gwendoline Christie, who stars as Larissa Weems, echoed Armisen’s sentiments. “I just love that it leaves you wanting more,” she told E!. “It leaves you absolutely hungry to see how this story's going to develop.”
When does Wednesday season 2 come out?
The first season was released on November 23, 2022, and had a record-breaking debut week with over 341 million hours viewed. But there’s no telling when the second season will premiere. Of course, we’ll be here, patiently waiting for updates.
What will Wednesday season 2 be about?
The first season took viewers into the world of Wednesday Addams as she begins her studies at Nevermore Academy in Jericho, Vermont. She discovers her psychic abilities, attempts to solve a chilling 25-year-old mystery involving her parents, and balances relationships with sirens, werewolves, and vampires at her new school.
At the end of the sason (spoiler alert), she discovers that her coffee shop crush and the Sheriff of Jericho’s son, Tyler, is actually the Hyde monster who committed merciless murders at Nevermore. She also found that the school’s botany professor, Marilyn Thornhill, is actually a woman named Laurel Gates, who was believed to have died years prior. She sought to get revenge on the Outcasts who murdered her family and was the Hyde master who controlled Tyler and hypnotized him into his monstrous form. Wednesday and her frenemy, Bianca, ultimately defeat Laurel and her evil accomplices.
However, Wednesday isn’t totally in the clear. When her friend, Xavier, gifts her a cell phone, she receives a threatening message that reads, “I’m watching you” with a gif of a knife going into her head — a chilling setup for the plot of season two.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gough and Miller teased the premise of the possible season, saying, “We wanna sort of explore and sort of complicate all of those relationships going forward.”
Enid, Wednesday's roommate, and Morticia, her mother, are also important parts of the season 2 storyline. “The show also is really about this female friendship, with Wednesday and Enid really being at the center of that,” Gough said. “We’re excited to explore now that Wednesday’s dipped her toe into the friendship pool, what’s that gonna look like? It’s like, she hugged. That was her big arc for the season, right? So it’s like now, we do that.”
“Then, the other thing that’s really interesting is to continue to explore the Wednesday-Morticia mother-daughter relationship as well,” Gough added. “Now that Morticia knows about the power, it has given her sort of an idea of how that’s going to go. How is their relationship going to evolve?”
What has Jenna said about Wednesday season 2?
Since season 1 premiered, Jenna has revealed what she wants from the next chapter of Wednesday, and it’s actually pretty simple — more darkness. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in November 2022, the actress hopes Wednesday won’t “play things so safe.”
“There are a lot of lines about her saving the school and doing whatever, but for me, her main drive with the monster is of a competitiveness,” she said. “Kind of, ‘Man, how’s this guy doing this?’ I think I want it to continue down an antihero stream rather than a typical hero.”
Jenna echoed this in her Variety Actors on Actors conversation with Elle Fanning on June 7, sharing that she hopes to explore that darkness on a deeper level. “I think we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more,” she said, before adding, “I think that we're kind of ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”
Jenna returns to season 2 not only as the leading lady, but as a producer as well. During a Comedy Actress Roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter, Jenna shared her excitement for her new role and emphasized the importance of speaking up and making your voice and opinions heard on set. “I think a project is best when there’s as many voices and ideas thrown out as possible,” she said. “And I’ve had experiences in TV where I felt my voice wasn’t heard, that I was meant to be a puppet... So, I went into Wednesday with hesitance. But I was fortunate to be working with someone like Tim Burton, who pulled me in his trailer one day and said that he wanted to be a soundboard for my voice. So, every day, me, him, the writers, we’d get together in the morning and go through sides.”
Back in March, Jenna made headlines after she revealed that she changed lines in Wednesday scripts, and in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, she opened up about her decision to take a stand during filming. “When I went into Wednesday I really put my foot down and made it clear that everything that I had to say mattered and was heard,” she said. “And as the show went on, we all got a better feel for one another and it’s become a really collaborative experience, and I feel really lucky to be able to be in the room early next season and be talking about scripts and giving notes.”
What about the rest of the cast?
Emma Myers (who plays Enid Sinclair) dished to Variety about the off-screen and on-screen relationship she shares with Jenna Ortega. “Jenna is very much like Wednesday. But because I’m not much like Enid, we don’t have the same dynamic in real life — me poking at her constantly, her brushing me off,” she explained. “We get along so well, I love Jenna. She’s one of my closest friends. I think we have a different dynamic off-screen, but I still don’t think it’s any less important or deep or beautiful than Enid and Wednesday’s.”
“I would really like to see Wednesday go somewhere international and interact with the international outcasts from different countries. I feel like that would be really fun,” she added.
As far as love goes, Myers mused, “As far as love interests go for Wednesday, I feel like at least for a second season, she needs to take her season of singleness,” she began. “She [Wednesday] just had a whole fiasco with her men, she’s got to lay it off for a little bit. I would be deterred from dating anybody if I had gone through that.”
Still thinking about season 1 star, Thing? Lon Molnar, co-president of the MARZ VFX team for Netflix dished to J-14 about the Addams family pet, and how its character could develop in the future. “I think it would be fantastic to explore what may have happened to lead him to be severed, possibly,” Molnar said. “I think that’d be — it was an idea that was floating around, and it would be fantastic to explore that for sure. But for us, anything with that character front and center, we’re ready to take the helm and help him tell that story.”
Who will return to Wednesday season 2?

There were multiple deaths at the end of Wednesday season one, which means those characters likely won’t return for season two if it happens. Christina Ricci, Riki Lindhomoe, and Gwendoline Christie are some of the actors whose characters faced their demise.
During a chat with Entertainment Tonight, Ricci opened up about possible plans for her return. “I don't think I'm allowed to say. On my end, the door is open,” she said. Looking back on her character's role, the former Addams Family star joked, “She was so fun to play. It's always so fun to play a villain.”
In a November 2022 interview with Variety, Gough teased Tyler’s return in season 2. “Yeah. Absolutely. He’s out there. That’s what we wanted to convey,” he told the publication.
Doohan himself confirmed this rumor, telling ET, “Coming back. Can’t really say anything else besides that, but I'm so excited to go back.” The actor continued, “Tyler's secret is out of the bag, I'm excited for season 2 to kind of explore him fighting between the monster and the real version of him. He doesn't have his master, Christina Ricci, anymore, so what's he gonna be like? I don’t know.”
