Everything Tumblr was obsessed with in 2022: ‘Stranger Things,’ cottagecore, BTS and more

Fandometrics has crunched the numbers and dropped Tumblr’s top 22 topics of 2022.

It measured a year’s worth of data from original posts, likes, reblogs and searches, weighted and ranked. Games and television dominated the conversation in 2022. In fact, the only musical artist to enter the list was BTS at No. 21 — shocking no one.

Stranger Things content took up three spots. The show took No. 1, “Eddie Munson” came in at No. 8 and “Steve Harrington” at No. 19. Minecraft was the only other property to make the list more than once.

The topic “MCYT” came in at No. 6 and “The Dream SMP Minecraft Server” at No. 11, which Fandometrics attributed to several new Minecraft SMP servers ramping up content on the subject.

Queer media made its mark this year, as well. Disney’s groundbreaking animated series The Owl House took the No. 2 spot; Our Flag Means Death came in at No. 9 and Arcane at No. 14.

Only four non-IP-related topics made the list. “Artists on Tumblr” (the platform’s artist-in-residence program) came in at No. 3, “cottagecore” at No. 12, “Halloween” at No. 20 and “dark academia” at No. 17.

One topic was notably absent from the list: “Goncharov (1973).” The Tumblr-created conspiracy theory about a (totally fake) lost Martin Scorcese film with homoerotic themes took off in October this year. The popular meme likely went viral too late to make it onto Fandometric’s list.
