Evictions begin for some at city-run migrant shelters

CHICAGO — Some asylum seekers who were staying at city-run shelters faced evictions on Sunday as the City of Chicago looks to enforce its 60-day limit on stays.

About three dozen migrants were scheduled for eviction, but the city confirmed Sunday afternoon that only three migrants were evicted from shelters.

The city was supposed to begin evicting those who had reached the 60-day limit on shelter stays this weekend, but on Friday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that there would be exceptions for families with children under the age of 18.

Migrants under quarantine, due to the recent rash of measles cases, and those who are pregnant or ill were also exempt.

According to an update from the city on Sunday afternoon, the three dozen migrants scheduled to exit received extensions due to exemptions.

The three migrants who faced eviction now have the option to return to the landing zone and reapply for shelter placement.

During a Friday meeting, officials from the Johnson administration said this is something that applies to all migrants who face eviction.

“Individuals will then be given notice to go to the landing zone, to reapply and so the staff team there will be able to help them if there is beds available re-enter the shelter system,” Brandie Knazze said.

City officials said families with children may now receive a 30-day extension up to three times through June 10th.
