Ex-Baton Rouge football star Mike Hollins out of ICU following Virginia shooting

BATON ROUGE - Former University Lab star and Virginia running back Mike Hollins has been released from the ICU, is off a ventilator and will attempt to start walking today, the law offices of Baton Rouge injury attorney Gordon McKernan told The Advertiser on Wednesday.

Hollins was among the victims Sunday night in a shooting at the University of Virginia that killed three players. He has undergone two surgeries since the shooting, according to his mother Brenda Hollins.

McKernan told Sports Illustrated that Hollins was on a ventilator and in critical condition Monday night.

Brenda has worked as an administrative supervisor for McKernan since 2015 and has been described as a family friend of McKernan's. McKernan's son played AAU basketball with Hollins and went to high school with the Virginia running back.

On Monday, University of Virginia President Jim Ryan identified the three Cavaliers football players who were killed as Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D'Sean Perry.

Former Virginia football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. was arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony on Monday, according to authorities.

Virginia has five players on its roster from Louisiana: Hollins, safety Donovan Johnson, wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks, defensive lineman Jonathan Horton and wide receiver Keytaon Thompson.

LSU football coach Brian Kelly addressed the shooting to begin his weekly news conference Monday. LSU linebacker West Weeks is a former Virginia player.

"It's tragic. Our hearts go out to them, the football program, the university. Just senseless violence," Kelley said. "College campuses should be a place where it's violent-free, and what happened yesterday is certainly heartbreaking and we certainly pray for all those involved. And it certainly hits close to home as well. Having players that actually had relationships with players on the team."
