Ex-Bobcat golfers Custer and Box celebrate 'first of many' Bentwood titles

There simply was no stopping former San Angelo Central High School golfers Cade Custer and Patrick Box at the 2022 Bentwood Country Club Men's Partnership.

Playing the three-day event together for the first time, Custer and Box shot 67-72-66--205 (11-under par) to shake off Jason Ball, another former Bobcat, and Jack Graves by two strokes (70-69-68--207).

"We putted good," Custer said. "My partner's (bleeping) good. I know you can't print that. I helped him when he needed some help, but yeah, we played good."

When asked if this was their first Bentwood title, Custer quipped with, "It is our first championship, the first of many," before going to celebrate with his buddies.

Custer graduated from Central in 2005, a year after Box.

"I kind of found (golf) again later in life," Custer said. "It's a hobby now more than an extracurricular. Man, I can't hold it together. Go talk to my partner."

Box talked about their mind-set coming into the weekend.

"We had a lot of confidence because we both grew up playing here, but we had never played in the partnership together," Box said. "It was kind of a bit of an unknown, but we knew what we were capable of."

Box said it made it extra special being paired with Ball and Graves, who had won two of the last three championships, on Sunday, as they began the day tied for the lead.

"It was probably the funnest six hours imaginable," Box said. "They're two really, really good golfers and two really, really good guys and it was just a blast."

Justin Holcomb and Chad Meeks (71-73-64--208) had the best round of the weekend on Sunday, and they finished third.

Central head football coach Kevin Crane and partner Murray Carson (69-72-68--209) placed fourth in the top flight that featured eight teams.

Tyler Ware, who won the 2021 title with former partner Zachery Murphy, placed fifth with Mark Vega (76-66-68--210). They couldn't overcome getting off to a slow start on Friday.
