Playing in the San Angelo Country Club Men's Partnership sure beats roofing houses in Austin for former San Angelo Central High School golfer Flynn McNabb, especially when you have a four-shot lead at the halfway point.

McNabb teamed up with Tyler Ware to shoot a 6-under par 65 Friday, giving them a two-day total of 132 after an opening-round 67.

Three other teams were tied for the lead with Ware and McNabb heading into the day. There's now a three-way tie for second between two-time champions John Duke Hudson and Colton Williams (68-68--136), Luke Healy and Mike Hillis (69-67--136) and defending champs A.J. Pursley and Travis Klutts (69-67--136).

Hudson is trying to win his seventh SACC title with various partners.

Ware and McNabb came on strong in Round 2 to give them some breathing room heading into Saturday.

"The day was going pretty smoothly and for the first time in the last two days. We kind of ham and egged it a little bit," Ware said. "His putter's been looking really good all week and we've been burning a lot of edges, but a few dropped today. And on the 17th hole today, the 15th hole for the golf course, he had to get up and down behind a tree root.

"He almost didn't want to hit the shot because he was afraid it was going to hurt him. So he hits the shot and it catches the actual flag and takes it down to about 18 feet, or 15 feet, and he drains a downhill putt. And that was just the big moment. The big thing of a two-man is to be in the hole together, not one person in their pocket. That was the first time pretty much the entire day that we were sweating. And him making that putt was just a testament to the grind you have to do out here."

McNabb went to school in San Angelo from the sixth grade until he graduated from Central in 2019.

The former Bobcat took his game to the Division-I level before life threw him a bit of a curveball.

"I played at Incarnate Word (in San Antonio) for just a semester and then COVID kind of changed the game plan of everything, and I just had to re-evaluate everything and sit down and take it all in," McNabb said.

"I'm in Austin working for a roofing company and when I can play golf, I take advantage of it, that's for sure."

Playing golf in triple-digit temperatures is a walk in the park for McNabb.

"Being out here is a treat because if it's 105, it stays 105," he said. "If you're on a roof in 105 weather, it feels like 120. It's hot, but I've seen hotter."

The second-round leaders say SACC has been showing its teeth this week.

"The pins are tough. The golf course was playing tough," Ware said. "(McNabb) making that putt kind of solidified what we're doing. He's pretty even keel and I'm more of an emotional golfer, and that's the first time I've seen him fist bump in two days. It was just so cool."

Ware moved here from Georgetown about 10 months ago and this is the first time he's played in a partnership with McNabb.

When McNabb talked about graduating from high school in 2019, Ware chuckled a little bit because that's the same year he graduated from college, and "That makes me feel old."

Ware played briefly at Texas State University before concentrating on academics.

"I was pretty burnt out on golf," he said. "I went to school and just played amateur events. And that's the great thing about golf -- you don't really have to quit the sport if you decide to hang it up for a little bit. You can keep doing these things and play at a highly competitive level."
