Ex-Cardinals OF Duncan dies at 38

Former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan died Friday after losing his battle with brain cancer. He was 38.

An announcement was made on the game broadcast by Fox Sports Midwest as the Cardinals were playing the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Duncan, the son of former Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan, played for the Cardinals from 2005-09. In his five major league seasons, he batted .257 with 55 home runs and 175 RBIs. In 2006, when the Cardinals won the World Series, he hit .293 with 22 home runs and 43 RBIs.

"His toughness is off the charts," former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said at the time, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "You see it the way he plays, the way he runs the bases, the way he defends, the way he takes at-bats. He's never going to give in."

Duncan retired from the game in 2010 and took a job with St. Louis radio station WXOS in 2011. In 2012, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and took a break to get treatment.

This January, Duncan permanently left his job as radio show host to continue his cancer fight. His mother Jeanine Duncan was also diagnosed with the same disease and died in June 2013.
