Ex-Husky Gaffney headed for Florida Atlantic

Apr. 28—Jalen Gaffney is heading south to continue his college basketball career.

After three years at UConn, the 6-foot-3 junior guard announced Wednesday that he was transferring to Florida Atlantic University.

Gaffney, who grew up in Columbus, New Jersey, averaged 4.0 points and 2.0 assists per game this season for the Huskies. He played in all 33 of the Huskies' games, though his playing time decreased as the season wore on. He was scoreless in each of the team's last three games.

During his three years at UConn, Gaffney played in all 87 of the team's games. He started 15.

Gaffney averaged 6.1 points as a sophomore in the 2020-21 season.

"During my three years at UConn I learned a lot about not only basketball, but about myself as well," Gaffney wrote on his social media accounts Wednesday. "As I continue to mature and become the player and person I want to be, I believe that in order (for) me to continue to grow, I need a change."

Gaffney is one of four UConn players who plan to transfer away from the school or have already done so. Rahsool Diggins is headed to UMass, Corey Floyd Jr. is going to Providence, and Akok Akok has yet to make his future plans official.

The Huskies have added two transfers to their roster so far, with plans to add one or two more. Guards Tristen Newton (East Carolina) and Nahiem Alleyne (Virginia Tech) have already committed to join coach Dan Hurley's program already.
