Chiefs coach Andy Reid raved about the atmosphere at Highmark Stadium for Sunday’s AFC Divisional game.

Bills fans were intent on making noise to cause problems for the Chiefs offense. But Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes used that to his advantage, as a former NFL offensive lineman pointed out on X (formerly Twitter).

“Going thru the Chiefs offense film now but something I noticed early in the game,” wrote Geoff Schwartz, who played for the Chiefs in 2013. “And these little details are important imo. When it was loudest Mahomes would dummy count, walk to the line and ID a defensive player (even tho some of those points were dummy IDs in the run game)... The RB would follow him to listen even if it was a run. This is important because most often we see a RB care about the ID in pass protection. So doing this every play doesn’t give the Bills defense a run/pass read.”

Schwartz, whose brother is former Chiefs tackle Mitchell Schwartz, then shared a video to illustrate his point. The clip shows Mahomes in shotgun formation and he steps up seemingly to point out protection assignments. Isiah Pacheco steps up and points as well, making it seem all but certain that the Chiefs would be passing.

But when the ball was snapped, Mahomes handed it to Pacheco, who broke off an 11-yard run. That’s one way the Chiefs duped the Bills into thinking a pass play was coming when KC instead ran the ball.
