Ex-Muncie man killed in Grant County crash

GAS CITY, Ind. — A former Muncie resident was killed Thursday in a two-vehicle crash in Grant County.

According to Indiana State Police, a 2011 Ford Focus driven by Jeremiah J. Rupel, 41, was westbound on Ind. 22 near Grant County Road 500-E when it crossed the center line on the state highway.

The Focus shortly after 8:30 a.m. collided head-on with an eastbound 2020 Freightliner semi-tractor that was pulling an empty box trailer.

Rupel, more recently of Upland, was pronounced dead at the scene, The semi-driver, 39-year-old Gabriell Eliserio, was not injured.

State police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, adding that alcohol and narcotics consumption were not believed to be factors.

In addition to ISP troopers, Grant County sheriff's deputies, Gas City firefighters, Upland police and representatives of the Grant County Emergency Management Agency and Grant County coroner's office responded to the scene.
