GOSHEN — Former NBA player Donte Greene was arrested in Elkhart County after police say he tried to rob a gas station clerk in Goshen last week.

Greene — who played for four seasons in the NBA and the NBA's Development League from 2008-2012 — is charged with attempted robbery in connection to the incident in which officials allege he "lunged" at a convenience store clerk.

In charging documents filed last week, Goshen police allege officers were dispatched to a store on Lincolnway East shortly after midnight in the early morning of Nov. 8 for reports of a drunk driver in the area. While searching for the car, dispatchers informed officers there was a 911 call saying the Phillips 66 gas station in the area was being robbed.

Police went into the store and arrested a man, later identified as Greene, before talking to the cashier working in the store that night.

Court documents say that the clerk told officers Greene entered the store and told the man to "give him all the money" before making threatening movements toward the cashier. The worker had pulled out his phone and tried to call 911, but Greene told him not to call the police, the documents say. In fact, workers at a Taco Bell connected to the Phillips station were the ones who called 911 after witnessing Greene's entrance into the store.

Video footage of the incident allegedly depicted Greene talking with the clerk and walking around the store before taking items out of his pockets as well as talking his shirt off. At that point, court documents say, Greene began lunging at the cashier who continually backed away behind the counter.

The documents state Greene did not have a weapon, nor did he take anything from the store. And though officers were apparently called to the area for reports of a drunk driver, Greene is not charged with any infraction related to alcohol consumption.

Greene is charged with attempted robbery, which carries a sentence of one to six years in prison if convicted. Court documents do not specify why Greene was in Goshen. The former basketball pro played for the Sacramento Kings for most of his NBA career before playing overseas and spent his college years at Syracuse University. His listed address in court documents is for Waldorf, Md.
