EXCLUSIVE — Former United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is joining the America First Policy Institute to lead its latest "priority," the Center for American Trade.

"AFPI is honored to have Ambassador Lighthizer join our all-star team," AFPI President Brooke Rollins told the Washington Examiner. "For years, the D.C. and global corporate elites, in the name of free trade orthodoxy, allowed markets and market efficiencies to be an overwhelming influence on policy decisions, but Ambassador Lighthizer, alongside President Trump, changed that trajectory and reengineered our Nation’s trade policy to finally put America first."

Lighthizer's tenure at USTR saw him serve as the lead negotiator on the Trump administration's United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement, and Phase One China Trade Deal. He also served as deputy USTR during the Reagan administration and practiced trade law for more than 30 years as a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & From LLP.

His work as AFPI's chairman of the Center for American Trade will "focus on promoting fair trade policies that put America's families, workers, manufacturers, and farmers ahead of the interests of global competitors."

Linda McMahon, AFPI's chairwoman of the Board of Directors and former President Donald Trump's first Small Business Administration administrator, claimed that Lighthizer's "contributions to the American economy and most importantly, the American worker, are beyond compare."

Lighthizer told the Washington Examiner his work as USTR "changed the paradigm on trade negotiations away from a focus on corporate profits and instead put American workers first" and, in joining AFPI, hoped "to continue to advance this new paradigm and continue the transformative policies we championed during the Trump Administration."

The Lighthizer announcement comes as the Biden administration is specifically refocusing its foreign, military, and trade policies around China.

The AUKUS nuclear submarine deal gave one of America's foremost partners in the region a massive military upgrade, and the administration announced on Thursday a new set of "transparency" initiatives aimed at combating semiconductor shortages caused by production stoppages in Asian countries.

President Joe Biden will also host leaders from Australia, Japan, and India at the White House on Friday in the first-ever in-person Quadrilateral Security Dialogue. The group's sole focus is promoting a safe and free Indo-Pacific and countering China's influence in the region.
