Examiner-Enterprise wins 8 journalism awards in state contest

The Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise took home four first-place journalism awards and other honors Saturday from Oklahoma Press Association's 2022 Better Newspaper Contest.

Reporter/photographer Andy Dossett won first place in the Feature Photo category for his photo of the historic 125-year-old First Christian Church's last service.

Sports Editor Mike Tupa took home first place for his story on James Droz, Bartlesville's TikTok star known for his sports jargon catchphrase, "What happened?"

Dossett won second place in the Feature Story category for "How a hot dog led to a $120,000 college scholarship for a Bartlesville student."

He also walked away with first place in the Sports and Photo Essay categories for a basketball shot and an essay called "The Dancing Cowboy: Jasper's Story."

Additionally, Dossett took second place for his photo essay on the 2022 Shamrock the 'Ville 5k and Fun Run. The EE also took second place for Overall Photography.

Finally, Dossett and Oklahoman reporter Jesse Christopher Smith won third place for In-Depth Reporting about the Okmulgee murder and dismemberment of four men. The story appeared in both the Oklahoman and the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise.

The OPA Awards Banquet took place June 9 and 10 at the Grand Casino and Hotel and Resort in Shawnee. Members of Indiana's Hoosier State Press Association judged almost 1,550 entries from 77 Oklahoma news publications.

The EE competes in Division 2, which consists of daily publications in cities with a population of 40,000 or less.
