Anna Friel has officially told Digital Spy her idea for a Marcella and Luther crossover.

The actress reprises her title role in Marcella later this month, nearly two and a half years after the third series was commissioned by ITV.

While the new episodes feature Marcella laying low in Northern Ireland with a new identity and ties to a powerful crime family, there won't be any meet-ups with Idris Elba's London detective DCI John Luther.

Yet, Anna Friel hinted to us in a recent interview that a meeting between the two TV detectives is "the direction" she wants Marcella to go in future series.

"The only time you see crossovers is in superhero movies," she pointed out. "I've never seen shows where they amalgamate characters from show to show. That would be quite rewarding to fans. But it's only in my head."

Friel joked that Dame Helen Mirren could also bring back her character Jane Tennison from Prime Suspect for a true Avengers-style story, where Marcella and Luther go head-to-head.

"She could very much [be his nemesis]. Who'd be the bravest? They'd probably fall in love, I think," she predicted.

Idris Elba and Luther's creator Neil Cross have confirmed that the franchise will return, but not on TV! Cross hinted in November that he would have "exciting news to share" about a film spin-off.

Marcella is set to return to ITV for its third series on Tuesday, January 26 at 9pm.
