The Boys star Aya Cash has opened up on how she kept her spirits up while filming the new true crime show The Girl From Plainville.

The show is based on a true crime 'texting suicide' case, in which a man named Conrad Roy is encouraged to take his own life by his girlfriend, Michelle Carter, who was on the phone with him the entire time he did it. So naturally, the show deals with a lot of heavy material.

Cash, who plays Katie Rayburn, the assistant district attorney who assured Michelle Carter's involuntary manslaughter conviction in the death of Conrad Roy, sat down with Digital Spy to talk about the process of filming the show and how she kept the morale high on set.

"Sets are such interesting places where you can be on the darkest drama or the scariest horror film and that's where you laugh the most. Or on a comedy set where everyone is very, very serious. It doesn't necessarily translate, it depends on who you're working with and how they work," she said.

She went on to explain the on-set environment and how it was completely different from the material they were filming.

"You always want to respect everybody's process, and for this everyone was very aware of wanting to respect these people and was very sensitive to the facts of this case. But there was also lightness on set and playfulness," she added.

She also expressed appreciation for the show's crew and the importance of social time with fellow set members.

"Nobody ever sees the crews but the crews are such a huge part of the experience of shooting something. This was a very interactive, lovely, fun crew. So a lot of times it's about breaking the tension by enjoying your social time, because also shooting during COVID, there's not much social time outside of shooting because you're trying to protect set and not let anyone get sick. So your social time is on set with these people," she explained.

The show also stars Colton Ryan as Conrad Roy and Elle Fanning as Michelle Carter.

The Girl From Plainville airs July 10 on STARZPLAY in the UK and airs on Hulu in the US.
