Chris Pratt has praised Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3's "original" romantic storyline.

The actor returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe once again as Star-Lord for the upcoming sequel, while Zoe Saldaña is also back as Gamora – albeit a new version following the original character's death in Avengers: Infinity War.

Speaking about the storyline between the two characters, Pratt explained exclusively to Digital Spy how romance factors in the new movie.

"There's this feral version of Gamora that looks like she hasn't learned any of the life lessons that we had learned together to become Quill and Gamora," he said. "He's lost without her and she's lost without him as far as he's concerned.

"He thinks that it was him, it was the Guardians of the Galaxy, it was finding this family that cared deeply about her that saved her life, and he is desperate to save her life again because of what it would mean for him because without her, he doesn't know who he is."

Pratt added that "it was really fun" and "an amazing way in to explore some of the themes of romance between two people that we've seen together on screen".

He continued: "I can't think of any other film that that type of storyline is explored. It was original which is something that is complicated to do in a romantic story, in any movie let alone a Guardians movie or a superhero movie."

The actor also opened up about whether Guardians 3 was his darkest role emotionally, explaining: "This was an opportunity to go there dramatically, not only with the storyline of Quill and Gamora, but also with the storyline of Rocket.

"This was an excellent opportunity to flex some different muscles, while still subverting those dramatic choices.

"We did a lot of subverting of action moments and fantasy moments, and even some dramatic moments, in the previous films, but this was darker in the drama and we still manage to find a way to undercut it with humour and that's [director] James [Gunn]'s speciality."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
