Hollyoaks star David Ames has teased newcomer Carter Shepherd's dark secret.

David, who is known for playing Dom Ames in Holby City, has joined Hollyoaks as Carter – the school's new Headmaster and Freya's dad.

He made his first appearance in last night's E4 episode (August 15), when he bumped into a smitten Goldie, who has been struggling following the death of her beloved dog Bronzer.

Speaking about joining the show, David said to Digital Spy: "It's been incredible. It's a really beautiful family to come and be part of.

"It is sort of reminiscent of Holby in a way. These long-running shows are a well-oiled machine and so you can get a bit nervous when you come and slot into them. But everyone's been so welcoming and so kind, and I feel like I've been here longer than I have. It's really, really nice."

"It was just a case of my agent contacting me and saying, 'They'd really like to see for this'", David explained about how the role came about.

"As an actor, you're auditioning all the time. There's other roles I've been up for in in Hollyoaks as well before I joined Holby City and I was up for numerous different roles in Holby City as well but it's just the one that fits you the best.

"This seems to be something that everyone from head office was keen to see me for and it's a nice, challenging character to play. He's quite distant from what I was used to playing when I was last in a long-running show on TV."

Teasing what fans can expect from Carter, David added: "Carter is an incredibly complex man. He's a father, he is a figurehead for the school and he is someone who is a figurehead for the community. He's a pillar of the community, he loves to help people and, outwardly, he is a shining beacon of a man, but underneath he's many, many different contradictions.

"It's going to be exciting to be able to play that and to see these other elements of his personality come to light as the storylines progress.

"I think fans will be a little wary of him first. He's not the warmest of guys. It takes a little while for him to soften to people. I've been working alongside Chelsea Healy who plays Goldie, and interacting with her, which has been a great deal of fun.

"And then, presently, I've been doing a lot of work with James Sutton, who plays John Paul. That has been really lovely to do as well. I think fans of the show will be intrigued. I think they will want to know where this is heading from the outset and we'll keep you guessing for quite some time."

David also hinted that Carter could be part of John Paul's upcoming storyline, which will play out for over a year.

"I don't think I can mention too much at the minute but I've certainly been planted very much within the upcoming stories," he continued.

"As you know, Carter is Freya's father and the headmaster of the school and so he is going be centrally involved in a lot of stuff coming up. You'll have to watch this space.

"But it's a very interesting relationship and dynamic that appears between Carter and John Paul. It's got numerous layers to it and it's going to be quite dynamic."

David added: "James has been a joy to work alongside. Obviously, John Paul does confide in Carter and, unbeknownst to John Paul at the time, he doesn't realise that Carter is actually Freya's father, so there's numerous layers to this.

"It means that, effectively, he's taking solace in the father of somebody who, through his past behaviour, has been permanently hurt and it's changed the trajectory of her life. That is quite a big deal.

"I think it's going to be very interesting to see how that dynamic changes due to John Paul taking solace in Carter for quite a few things and looking to Carter for guidance.

"Carter is quite complex and he certainly has a lot of outward control and is quite wise in his advice. It gives John Paul a port in the storm, so to speak."
