EXETER — “Sunrise, Sunset and Moonlit Eves” proved to be a very popular theme in June at the Seacoast Artist Association. Best In Show Award Winner was William Kramer for his work titled ‘Still Water #3.’  “This painting captures a salt marsh on Cape Cod found on the side of a road in Eastham,” commented Kramer. “I really feel drawn into these often-overlooked areas where stillness can be so easily found; the contrast of the rugged trees and grass with the mirror-like surface of the water. These are the scenes I want to capture within my new ‘Still Water Series.’ This painting is mostly oil, also acrylic, and epoxy resin. For the last few months, I have been testing and developing this original concept that embraces several mediums and has a unique ability to capture what I see so often day to day. I have become obsessed with reflective surfaces in nature, specifically how they can be such a contrast to the scene around them.  The contrast of the rugged trees and grass with the mirror-like surface of the water.  I am planning to create paintings from lakes and streams to the seacoast in this style all summer.”

A familiar name in the SAA’s People’s Choice Awards is Masako Buck who won again, this time with her Portsmouth painting ‘Night Out’.  This award is voted on by attendees of the Second Friday reception where they were entertained by popular folk artist Jerry Short who will return in October.  “I wanted to paint the city night scene so went to Portsmouth one night and took a picture. I added a moon before submitting it for June theme show!  I’ve been painting with SAA artist and watercolor instructor Doris Rice for a long time, and I appreciate her suggestions and critiques on my paintings.”
