How do you say Exeter? Hunter Long's Miami Dolphins teammates stumped in hilarious video

"How many (letter) Es are there here?" asked Alec Ingold, fullback for the Miami Dolphins.

As veteran players of the Miami Dolphins began arriving at training camp this week, an unexpected question surfaced: How do you pronounce Exeter, the New Hampshire hometown of second-year Dolphins tight end Hunter Long?

Long, 24, known locally as a former football star for Exeter High School, of course, nailed it, saying "Exeter, New Hampshire, born and raised." Pronunciations weren't as smooth from Long's teammates in a video posted by the Dolphins on social media Monday.

Failed but hilarious attempts came from offensive lineman Robert Hunt, who let out a deep sigh before his mispronunciation, and free safety Jevon Holland who said "Wow, that's insane" immediately after his not-so-accurate attempt.

Long is entering his second year in the NFL after leaving Boston College early to enter the NFL draft, being selected by Miami in 2021. The Dolphins players aren't the first to have trouble saying Exeter.

"Wow, that's hysterical," Exeter Historical Society co-Executive Director Barbara Rimkunas said after seeing the video.

Rimkunas, who has been with the Exeter Historical Society since 2000, said she has heard her fair share of mispronunciations.

"Now that I think about it, I’ve heard two variations," Rimkunas said. "'EGG-sitter', most common, the one my New York mother always uses; and 'x-ZEE-tur', generally from someone calling from another state — such as a marketer or political pollster."

Rimkunas added Exeter is pronounced incorrectly about 20% of the time in her estimation.

In the 42-second video, eight Dolphins players in total had a crack at it and only a few got it right or came close, sometimes after multiple attempts.
