New exhibit chronicles fight for Black civil rights in Maryland

A new exhibit immerses visitors in the ongoing fight for Black civil rights in Maryland. The Maryland Center for History and Culture's new exhibit is called "Passion and Purpose: Voices of Maryland's Civil Rights Activists." It chronicles the "separate but equal" doctrine in the 1930s and 1940s, and it continues through modern day struggles and protests, like those over Freddie Gray, George Floyd and many others. The voice of the late U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings is part of an oral history collection at the heart of the exhibit. Visitors can listen to and read dozens of conversations with civil rights leaders, many of which were recorded 40 years ago.
