Amare Cantare will perform Bach’s Cantata 131 and Vivaldi’sGloria

DURHAM — The Seacoast’s vocal chamber chorus Amare Cantare will perform two concerts on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Dover, N.H. and on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. in Portsmouth, N.H.

The concert program includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata 131, Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir (Out of the Depths, I Call to You, O Lord) and Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria with accompaniment by a chamber orchestra of local professional instrumentalists. The soloists for both works are Amare Cantare members. In addition to the choral works, the orchestra will perform the second movement (“Air”) of Bach’s Orchestral Suite in B, BWV 1068. The concert is supported in part by a grant from the Waldo and Alice Ayer Trust, Citizens Bank N.A.

“We are excited to be performing two Baroque choral gems this season,” said Catherine Beller-McKenna. “One of Bach’s earliest cantatas, Aus der Tiefe is also one of a handful of his cantatas with multiple choral movements. And Vivaldi’s Gloria, one of the most frequently performed works in the choral literature, promises to be a treat for our audiences.”

All tickets are $18 and are available at www.amarecantare.org. There will be limited ticket availability at the door. All members of Amare Cantare are fully vaccinated and self-test before concerts. Per CDC guidelines, masks are optional for all attendees.

The Saturday, Nov. 19 concert will take place at St. Joseph Church, 150 Central Avenue, Dover, N.H. at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, Nov. 20 performance will take place at South Church, 292 State St., Portsmouth, N.H. at 3 p.m.

Since 1977, Amare Cantare has performed masterworks and choral music from five centuries. Based in Durham, N.H., the chamber choir’s auditioned members come from all over the Seacoast and strive for musical excellence in the performance of challenging and diverse repertoire. The group has produced three albums including En Vivo: Choral Music of Spain and the Americas, Amare Cantare Live, and to love to sing.
