BHTNH brings three-time National Book Award Finalist to poetry series

Marilyn Nelson

PORTSMOUTH — The Black Heritage Trail of NH is bringing three-time National Book Award Finalist and celebrated poet Marilyn Nelson to the second of this year’s Black Matter is Life poetry series on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m.

The Black Matter is Life: Poetry for Engagement and Overcoming examines the work of both well-known and little-known Black poets to explore and discuss the rich tradition and innovation found in African American poetry. This program is designed to build bridges across the racial divide by introducing the audience to works that shine a light on a rich cultural heritage that has often gone unexplored. We ask the audience to consider how African American poetry provides tools for healing our nation’s deep racial wounds.

Marilyn Nelson joins co-hosts Dennis Britton and Courtney Marshall in discussing the theme “Poetry of the Ordinary Day.” Ms. Nelson is the author or translator of eighteen poetry books for adults and children, and five chapbooks.  Her 2014 memoir How I Discovered Poetry, a series of 50 poems about growing up in the 1950’s in a military family, each poem stamped with a place and date from the many places they lived, was named one of NPR’s Best Books of 2014.  Poet Mark Doty is quoted as saying “Nelson’s bold and sure poems long for heaven and -- happily for us -- continue a lifelong affair with the occasions of earth.”

Our hosts will deconstruct and discuss four pre-assigned poems: “Cutting Greens” by Lucille Clifton, “Eddie Priest’s Barbershop and Notary” by Kevin Young, and “A Perfect Game” by Yesenia Montilla.”

The Black Matter is Life Poetry Series is a virtual event. To register, visit www.blackheritagetrailnh.org.
