Summer Concerts at 3S Artspace announced

PORTSMOUTH — Not only does 3S Artspace, located at 319 Vaughan St., in Portsmouth, offer intentionally curated breadth in the arts disciplines presented to the community, we also offer range within each discipline and concerts are no exception. Read on for some highlights coming up in our summer lineup featuring nationally touring acts and regional talent in our intimate club space that appeals to the music nerd in all of us.

Danielle Nicole returns to Portsmouth, on June 1 for her first show at 3S Artspace. An internationally recognized singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Kansas City, MO, Nicole's distinctive, inventive bass work—which resulted in her becoming the first female to receive nomination for the Blues Foundation's Blues Music Award for Best Instrumentalist - Bass—is the product of years of intensive roadwork. Although her voice draws comparisons to artists such as Susan Tedeschi, Bonnie Raitt and Etta James, it’s only the feeling she will invoke those memories. Nicole’s show, style, and tone are all her own and can only be experienced.

Current line-up consists of Co-founding member Brandon Miller on guitar and vocals and World Renowned Drummer Go-Go Ray.

$25 general admission in advance and $30 day of show. Partially seated. For tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/danielle-nicole-tickets-560565936807.

Moxie – Warm adjectives like "effervescent" and "soulful" have been used to describe Moxie’s comforting indie-rock; still, with two full length LPs, few can accurately articulate what makes the independent outfit so addictive. Nestled atop head-bobbing backbeats, funky guitar voicings share the spotlight with melodic, bouncing basslines to create rich, indulgent instrumentation that only Rei Kimura's eminent croon could occupy.

3S Artspace will be Moxie’s last stop on their summer-long tour on Sunday, June 18. Tickets are $15 general admission in advance and $20 day of show. For tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/moxie-w-the-doozers-tickets-619182520587.

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers– North Carolina’s Sarah Shook sings with a conviction and hard honesty sorely lacking in much of today’s Americana landscape. Always passionate, at times profane, Sarah stalks/walks the line between vulnerable and menacing, their voice strong and uneasy, country classic but with contemporary, earthy tension. You can hear in their voice what they've seen; world weary, lessons learned—or not—but always defiant. Writing with a blunt urgency—so refreshing these days it's almost startling—Sarah's lyrics are in turn smart, funny, mean, and above all, uncompromising. The Disarmers hit all the sweet spots from Nashville’s Lower Broad to Bakersfield and take Sarah's unflinching tales out for some late-night kicks. At times, it’s as simple and muscular as Luther Perkins’ boom-chicka-boom, or as downtown as Johnny Thunders.

The Disarmers line-up is currently Jack Foster on drums, Blake Tallent on guitar, Andrew Lambie on bass, and Nick Larimore on pedal steel.

Sarah Shook & The Disarmers’ return to 3S Artspace on Saturday, June 24. Tickets are $15 for members, $17 general admission in advance, and $20 day of show. For tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sarah-shook-and-the-disarmers-tickets-568538131857.

Calexico with Brian Lopez – Praised by NPR for their “sprawling, cross-cultural indie rock,” Calexico has spent the better part of the past three decades exploring the dusty musical borderlands of the American Southwest, crafting singular, cinematic songs as mysterious and magnificent as the arid desert landscapes that inspired them. Founded in Tucson, AZ, by guitarist/singer Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino, the band first emerged to widespread acclaim in the mid-1990s with a string of arresting, evocative records that blurred the lines between their roots, rock, and Latin influences, but it was 2003’s 'Feast of Wire' that truly marked the duo’s commercial and critical breakthrough, earning them their first appearances on the Billboard charts and rave reviews everywhere from The Guardian to Pitchfork, who called the record “genuinely masterful.”

3S Artspace presents Calexico Saturday, Aug. 19. Tickets are $38 for members and $42 general admission. For tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/calexico-w-brian-lopez-tickets-62917018395.

Fung is at work on new projects with librettist Royce Vavrek, Network for New Music, Ensemble for These Times, and the Cape Cod Chamber Music Society. An album of Fung’s first four string quartets by the Jasper Quartet will be released on Sono Luminus in 2023. Fung is 2023 Composer-in-Residence at Alba Music Festival Composition Program in Italy.
