Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Later this month, Wake County's first diversity, equity, an inclusion director will begin work advocating for access, equity and inclusion through government initiatives. His first day will be January 14 and he said that his first task is to listen. (CBS17)

  2. As many students return back to school today, Wake County will be expanding the weekly testing in schools. WCPSS is partnering with MAKO Medical to offer the voluntary tests. Until now only 11 schools have been eligible but the district sent an email to parents on Thursday stating that they would be changing that to help combat the spread. (CBS17)

  3. After being in prison for more than a decade, former Raleigh gang member Kerwin Pittman is advocating for changes in the criminal justice system. Pittman founded the nonprofit "Rreps" which stands for recidivism reduction educational program services, and him and his group have been advocating for Governor Roy Cooper to use his clemency powers to reduce the amount of people locked up across the state.   4. Beginning today, the third of Wake County's newest COVID-19 testing sites will open. Five County Stadium in Zebulon will offer results in 24-28hours and requires pre-registration. The site will be open Monday-Friday 7:00am-4:00pm. (Spectrum News 1)

  5. Many North Carolina groups are celebrating a win as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is requiring chemical companies to test PFAS. The EPA is using federal authority to require chemical companies to begin testing what risk PFAS chemicals may present to humans. The companies will be required to fund the research and disclose results to the government. (Star News Online: Possible Paywalled Content)
