Expect ‘electric live performance’ from multi-genre group at Modesto’s Gallo Center

Las Cafeteras, inspired by a variety of genres, comes to the Gallo Center. Time for Three also will play the downtown Modesto venue, while Turlock Community Theatre brings in a double bill of music. They make up the entertainment in the region set for Jan. 27-Feb. 2.

The group Las Cafeteras brings its music to the Gallo Center. According to the center’s website, the group “has developed a genre-bending sound and electric live performance infusing lyrically rich storytelling with the purpose of sharing the hidden stories of migrant life in Los Angeles.” The group was inspired by Mexican music, rock, reggae, hip-hop and Motown.

Time for Three

Through a blend of instruments and vocals, Charles Yang (violin), Nick Kendall (violin) and Ranaan Meyer (double bass) play the sounds of various eras, styles and traditions of Western music. The group will play at the Gallo Center.

Musical double bill

Thee Sinseers and The Altons will play a show at Turlock Community Theatre. Thee Sinseers “are a powerhouse of soul and R&B; evocative of their hometown of East L.A.’s Friday evening cruises, Saturday night backyard boogies, and Sunday afternoon barbecues that helped shape a resurgence and interest in this modern wave of soul music,” according to the theater website. Thee Sinseers features a full band with a three-piece horn section, vocal harmonies and a rhythm section.

The Altons, natives of the Southeast LA region, “curate a ballad of retro-indie-soul that has captivated local audiences for several years, quickly driving them to become a staple of the scene,” the theater website says.

Modesto-set film

Set in 1980s Modesto and featuring Modesto actors, “Warm Blood” will screen at the State Theatre. The film follows Red, a young runaway who returns to her hometown to find her father. She reflects on her early teen life through a journal she finds in her old bedroom. Tom, possibly a figment of her imagination, continues to reappear after she repeatedly runs away.

“Burning Injustice”

The documentary “Burning Injustice” follows the journey of Latino activists John Mataka and Bianca Lopez from the nonprofit Valley Improvement Projects as they fight against one of the last trash incinerators in California. Coming to the State Theatre, it focuses on health issues from pollution. Following the film on Jan. 27 only, Valley Improvement Projects will present its Stanislaus Zero Waste Plan and there will be a panel discussion.
