Expect long traffic delays on SR-16. Man driving wrong way crashed into another vehicle

Drivers should expect traffic delays for the next few hours traveling west on state Route 16. All lanes of westbound Route 16 near Burnham Drive are closed following a multi-vehicle collision.

Officials are investigating after the crash happened about 1 p.m. Monday.

A man driving a Ford F350 was traveling east on Route 16 before getting into the westbound lane and striking a SUV head-on, said Robert Reyer, Washington State Patrol public information officer.

The man in the pick-up truck ran off. Law enforcement is looking for him, Reyer told the Gateway.

The SUV had two people inside: a male driver and a female passenger. The female passenger was transported to the hospital with major injuries. The SUV driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

WSDOT does not have an estimate when lanes could reopen, Reyer said.

It appears the man who caused the wreck stole the pickup from the Tacoma mall Monday morning, Reyer said.

The owner of the truck has a tracking device on it and was updating law enforcement on its location.

All lanes will remain closed until further notice.

Peninsula School District alerted parents of bus delays for all schools.
