Expect `significant’ traffic delays due to work on metro-east bridge, interstates

Lane closures on Interstate 70 over the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge and on I-55/70 nearby over the next two weeks are expected to cause “significant traffic delays,” the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Monday.

Lanes will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, May 23: Eastbound I-70 (Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge) near milepost 1.4

  • Wednesday, May 24: Westbound I-70 (Stan Musial bridge) near milepost 1.4

  • Friday, May 26, and Tuesday, May 30: Westbound I-55/70 near milepost 3.2

  • Monday, June 5, and Tuesday, June 6: Eastbound I-55/70 near milepost 3.2.

“These lane closures are required to conduct electrical work on sign truss structures at each location,” an agency release states. “One lane will be open at all times at each work location.”

The state transportation agency cautioned drivers to “pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.”
