When Indianapolis residents celebrate the holidays, they should expect recycling and trash pickup a day later.

Curbside recycling as well as residential and heavy trash are not picked up when holidays fall on weekdays, causing services to operate for the remainder of the week on a slide schedule. Holidays falling on weekends do not interfere with the trash pick up schedule.

A slide schedule means a resident’s normal pickup day will move back one day after the holiday. Residents with Friday pickup would instead be on Saturday. The following week would resume normally.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day affect the trash pick schedule in 2022. New Year’s Day and Christmas Day are both on the weekend this year, so they will not change the schedule.

During the winter months, spokesperson Hannah Scott-Carter said trash pickup could also be delayed due to inclement weather. If that happens, trash and recycling will resume when conditions improve on a slide schedule.

If someone forgets to put their trash out and misses their pickup, Scott-Carter said they can try to fit it in their cart for next week. Extra household and heavy trash can also be taken to the Marion County Citizens’ Transfer Station. Located at 2324 S. Belmont Ave., the center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and charges a cash fee of $2 per carload and $5 per SUV or pickup truckload.

Any updates and reminders regarding trash pickup would be communicated on the Department of Public Works’ social media accounts and through its newsletter.
