Experience new cultures at this inaugural Howell event

HOWELL — The Livingston Diversity Council and Livingston Arts Council are banding together to bring different cultures to Howell.

"We have this kind of shared vision for bringing culture and arts into Livingston County for the experience as well as the appreciation for differences," said LDC Executive Director Nicole Matthews-Creech. "It's something that I think people can really get together on."

The inaugural event, called Cultura, will celebrate music, art and food from different cultures. On Saturday, Oct. 7, the two organizations will hold the event from 12-11 p.m. on Walnut Street and in the Howell Opera House. Admission is free.

"We're hoping to create a real different kind of entertainment that people aren't used to seeing here," Matthews-Creech said.

Performers are traveling from around the state, including Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Detroit and Ann Arbor.

"It's just meant to be a little taste. People aren't meant to sit all day," Matthews-Creech said. "I imagine people will come in for the specific things they might be interested in and maybe stay for something they wouldn't necessarily find themselves interested in."

In the lobby of the opera house, there will be art posted on the walls, unique performers and more. Cultures represented include those from Japan, Polynesia, Africa, India, South America and beyond.

According to Matthews-Creech, all performances will be free, with the opportunity to attend some ticketed events inside the Opera House.

"It's as much for our community as I think it's for those outside our community to see how welcoming we are, how we're growing," she said. "We want people to see us being who we truly are and putting our best face forward."
