Explainer: Why do we see colorful sunrises, sunsets this time of year?

During mid to late fall and early winter we get some spectacular views at sunrise and sunset. The reason for the colorful views this time of year is because of the lower sun angle. Another ingredient that helps with the fiery look in the sky is clouds. Thinner clouds at mid to higher levels help provide a more vibrant color in the sky.

You may have noticed this week has featured a number of days in a row with a bright and colorful sky at sunrise and at sunset. This is due to the sun angle, but it’s also due to the clouds that have been kicked up in our sky from the remnants of Ian that’s been stalled to the east of us this week.
