Faraway Farm is home to a colorful herd of prize-winning alpacas, bred for their luxuriously soft fleece. The farm store offers homegrown yarn, handmade alpaca garments, throws and whimsical handmade toys. The farm store is open weekends 12 to 4 p.m. until Christmas and weekdays by appointment. Randy Pratt, owner and chief operating officer, stands in a Christmas tree field Nov. 8 at Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm in Yorktown Heights. The farm is celebrating its 107th season of harvest. Reservations for Choose-n-Cut Christmas trees start the Saturday after Thanksgiving and are available as long as the trees last.
Patrick Saint Ange as Scarecrow and Stefany Dalacio as Dorothy rehearse a scene Nov. 15 from "The Wizard of Oz" at Yorktown Stage under the direction of August Abatecola in Yorktown Heights. In its 25th year, Yorktown Stage mounts six yearly productions, including Broadway musicals and three yearly kids' productions. For more information, visit www.yorktownstage.org.
A cyclist rides Nov. 8 on the North County Trailway in Yorktown Heights. Just over 20 miles, the trailway is a paved path located on the former Putnam Division line of the New York Central Railroad. It starts in Eastview in the Town of Mount Pleasant and goes north to Baldwin Place in the Town of Somers on the Putnam County border.
Doug Smith plays piano Oct. 31 in the Ford Piano showroom at the Jefferson Valley Mall in Yorktown Heights. The Jefferson Valley Mall, also known as the JV Mall, opened its doors in 1983 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Macy's and Dick's Sporting Goods anchor the mall, which houses dozens of retail shops and restaurants.
The Yorktown Railroad station, circa 1905, in Railroad Park in Yorktown Heights. It's the only standing station of four Yorktown stations from the New York Central Putnam Division. It remained in service until the Putnam Division finally shut down in 1958. It's a local-, state- and federal-designated historic landmark.
Deanna Lentini, Guide Dog Mobility Instructor, works with Jessie, a 2-year-old female black Labrador retriever guide dog in training, on navigating obstacles Nov. 14 on the nature path at the Headquarters & Training School campus of Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights. Guiding Eyes is a nonprofit organization committed to providing exceptional guide dogs at no cost to people with vision loss.
A fisherman out Nov. 7 on Mohanisc Lake in Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown Heights. The park offers hiking trails, boating and recreational fishing on Mohansic Lake and Crom Pond, picnic and pavilion areas, a swimming pool and disc golf course.
The historic First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown in Yorktown Heights. The church first began in 1730. Their building was used as a meeting place for patriots during the Revolutionary War. It was destroyed by British Troops. This structure is the church's third building and dates back to 1840.
Ralph Zucker, 78, who has lived in Mohegan Lake since 1982, plays fetch Oct. 31 with his dog Apollo at Lake Mohegan Park in the Mohegan Lake hamlet of Yorktown. The lakefront members-only park is for Mohegan Lake residents. It has a pavilion, dock, playground, beach and more for members to enjoy.
